Congrats on getting the eggs and so close by! That will be a huge help, takes all that banging around from shipping out of the equation.
Ok, so are you hand turning? I again didn't follow every thread, and just jumped on in.....that's me what can I tell ya?
The Emu farmers I talked with were adamant about the way emu eggs are turned. Now sometimes I think a lot of what goes on is just too much over compensation for artifical incubation, but if it's not broke, don't fix it. I hope this makes sense and maybe you already knew this and had it explained.......since Emu eggs are so big and so oval, they incubate totally on their side. So to turn properly, you never want to roll the egg all the way over. Yes I am going to get you way more confused before I bring you back around.
What I mean by that is if you draw an X on one side, and an O on the other, I luckily had a white chalky type pencil so I could do it on those dark green eggs, then imagine the egg has one end pointing towards you directly and the other end pointing away from you. I sure hope this is painting a good picture.
When you turn, the first time turn the egg towards the right, putting the X or the O on the bottom and bringing the other side up. Now on the next turn, here's where you don't want to roll an egg all the way over, you turn it towards the left. So in essence the egg is not tumbling in a complete circle but rather rolling one way, then rolling BACK the other way. Now I know sometimes all these little details seem too much and confusing, I say that because my head was smokin by the time I got everything into my head on this, but I'll be darned I have managed to hatch Emu eggs really well and I hand turned them 3 times a day for 52 days.
When I looked up the incubation temps, knowing they are lower than other birds eggs, I decided on right in the middle of the temp range. The temp range in my book also had what should be corresponding days to hatch at those temps and I chose everything to be mid-range and have one incubator that can be adjusted up and down and is digital so I could set it exactly.
So really that's all I can throw in there as a just in case if you didn't alreaady know. I am wishing the best for you as I know you're going to LOVE the babies.
