I wouldn't even bet on the staff getting it right. :D
I think, at least at the particular location I went to, that the staff had little clue as to what breed was what. I purchased the rest of my flock at a local (not a chain) that knew what they were doing! Never going back to TS for another chick!!

either way you got some really pretty little chicks. yes I'm sure it's annoying that they are not the breeds you thought but I'm one of those kinda people who think you end up with something for a reason.. Also (don't think anyone else said this might have slipped past me if they did) but not all chickens like to be held even if handled from chicks so will put up with it others run clucking bloody murder lol I have about 4 of them myself.

Speckled Sussex (or spangled birds, for that matter) are more of a reddish-mahogany hue, chipmunky stripes on the back, and white or yellow down on the chest. :) As I don't have any baby pictures of my SS, here's something I found off the internet:
For BYC.PNG
Are the stripey chickies standard fowl? It's hard to determine breed sometimes, as that seems to be a classic look. :) They almost remind me of Old English Game or Phoenix...

And the other appears to be a Barred Rock! You got one! :D

If you are concerned about them being less friendly, ALL chickens can become tame. If handled properly, and gently, and frequently, any breed can become sweet and friendly. It doesn’t have to be a specific breed. While you will see a bit of a difference between say, a leghorn (flighty) and a columbian rock (extremely friendly), both can be either skittish or lap birds.

They seem to be pretty flighty so far but then settle after I hold them for a bit. I guess I was more trying to get an idea of what to expect as far as the bird as a whole. Is there any way to tell if they are male or female yet?

The amount of faith people put in the knowledge of feed store employees, never ceases to amaze me.
I was at Farm&Home last week and they had about 20 bins of chicks and ducks.
A customer was questioning the employee about the bantams. She asked how big they would get. He said, "about 6 pounds."
I called her aside and told her there is no way any bantam would get that big and to never again trust the advice of a feed store employee..

Hopefully they can read well enough to pull the chicks out of the Australorp box and put them in the Australorp bin.
