I wanted one of those about two weeks ago. Or a Finnish Spitz. I was looking at Finn dogs because my husband is Finnish. XD

I got my undercoat rake from Walmart. It's just easier to do amazon link. (that was a long time ago though, not sure if they still sell it at walmart)

Actually, we used to have one of those button retractable slickers. The button no longer works, so the bristles don't stay out without holding it down, but it brushes.

That's good! I always use the slicker before the rake to straighten the fur out and detangle to prevent cutting the fur. Especially on one of the cats, it would be painful for him if I went straight to the rake because his fur is so long and dense.

It all depends why you are brushing. Undercoat rake for shedding. I would never recommend a furminator, although personally I've never used one. A good rubber curry brush, or a shedding blade is also good for shorter coats. Otherwise hands work pretty good on shorter coats too. I think you said it was a German Shepherd mix? I might just get a regular bristle brush to start with just to get them used to you brushing. Than the rest when the coat starts to change around 7-8 months.

Always be careful when brushing that you don't apply too much pressure and scratch the skin beneath.
