Looks like a barred rock hen or possibly a maran. Maran will lay dark brown eggs.

Yep- the beard is very obvious in those two new pictures.

I definitely do not understand why people keep saying barred rock or marans(yellow legs...) for this bird.

Could it possibly be a rose comb, making it a Dominique mix? I don't know..I'm purely just curious.

I have no idea. We hatched these guys at my preschool and the feed store said all the eggs were Rhode Island reds. Soooo clearly they lied haha

Thats a good question. Unfortunately the chick is bearded making it impossible to clearly determine if it's pea or rose. That's because beard reduces the wattles all by itself/ Pea also reduces wattle size.. rose has no effect on wattle size. Had the bird been non bearded, it would be way easier to be sure if it was rose or pea. (if wattles were of normal size and appearence it would be rose)

If it turns out to be a girl and lays blue or green eggs then pea would be far more likely because of the linkage between pea and colored eggshell genes.

The comb is more typical of mixing between pea and single comb though. Rose comb bred with single mostly tend to produce obviously rose by the width and triangular shape, if a little funky with lots of spikes.

It's definitely not a Marans. Eye color and leg color are wrong, and there are no feathers on the shanks.

It's most definitely a male, however; at this young age, there's no way the comb would be that red unless it was a male.
