What kind of pellet gun for squirrels?

There was a time that if I did not shoot a squirrel, I did not have an evening meal. I have no need to shoot them now, but I do shoot the Woodpeckers that keep pecking holes in my house.

Gamo on clearance at Cabela's. cone nose pellets.

Sorry Jonathan. ecology is not a matter of opinion. If a niche is emptied by your family killing squirrels it will be simply refilled with more squirrels. The only long term solution is to prevent their access to that which you want untouched. Same exact principle applies to preds and chicken coops/runs.

What exactly does squirrel taste like? Nutty?

Until I got chickens the only way I took out squirrels was with my car. I use to have little squirrel stickers on my dash for every squirrel I hit. Not my fault if they change their mind mid street.

it does NOT taste like chicken....in my opinion, I thought it reminded me of fried morel mushrooms. Hubby thinks I'm crazy, but I thought it did, very tender and rich flavor. You have to think, they only eat nuts and vegetation.

I'm still going to look into getting a gun of some sort, not soley for squirrels, but also for any predators that come upon chickens and learn a habit. (Or, if one is being eaten) Do not think I'm not trying to solve the main problem! I've been posting adds on cragslist for LOTS of supplies to hopefully squirrel-proof the pen and the patio. Though that doesn't mean I won't hesitate to get my dad to shoot one of the squirrels gorging on the feed. (I now have to by my own feed, and my job isn't very fun, so the less waste the better)

Heck, at close range it's not hard to land shots with a BB gun. Mine is a Crosman, and is actually compatible with pellets. We've shot & killed several small critters with it - plus, it's an excellent dog deterrent.

I used to open the side window and shoot AT the squirls in my bird feeders. WELL after wasting ALOT of pellets I found out that red pepper sprinkled on what they like to eat or sniff around puts them off.
they will NOT touch bird food with it on it! and I would think sprinkled on edible flowers will work well. Birds don't have saliva and so hot does NOT bother them.
Try LOTS of ground red pepper and you don't have to be a straight shot. Though it was fun to chase them around with the pellit gun. In two years I never made contact, close, but that don't count unless your playing horse shoes or have a granade:lol:.
ALSO works on a dogs sniffer! They will tear up for DAYS!

We use an RWS. Single pump.
.22 pellet gun. Travels at 900 fps and takes out everything up to a small coon.
Not cheap, but you don't have to pump 10 times.
1 pump
1 shot
1 Kill.

A squirrel is nothing more than a tree rat.
I will shoot them until they are listed as an endangered species.
They are fine to eat ,as long as they aren't eating pine cones.
