Wheaten Marans/BLR Wyandottes Incubating Blog

Quote:
When I'm incubating my Marans eggs if there are some that I can't tell for sure which end is up I lay them on their sides alongside the turner and by day ten the air cell will have grown enough that I can tell and then I put them in the turner. Often I still can't really see much other than the aircell, but at least I know which way to put them.

Katy,

Thanks for the reply. The only problem is they have been in the bator now since last Friday...... Some of them may be upside down for all I know. One of the ones I thought was lighter at the end and when I looked at it I am almost positive that it was the little end. I thought it may be due to the fact that it has less fluid on that end so it was lighter. I mind as well leave it like it is since any damage has probably been done if they are the wrong way up... Sunday is day 9 and I might have to try again with a very bright light..... I may just leave it all alone till day 18....

It's funny, the first day I candled, the clear cell was at the pointy end. Day 4
Then I candled on day 7 and the clear air cell had settled at the blunt end. Oh lucky me!

Where in FL are you? I would love to have dibs on any extras you don't want

I'm in Jax. Nice looking incubator, too!

My marans were really tough until I hooked up our old projector towards day 16. All I could see even then was the air sack and a very dark shadow. Kept all nine til the end and 2 days ago 6 hatched on day 21.

It was fun though, we had no idea how many would come through. They had to make it to Alaska first!

SpeckledPullet,

I'm in the Clearwater area and I do need to get rid of extras. We will see what hatches. I also have 18 more coming mid Feg that I am only keeping a few hens from as well. That hatch will be 6 Ameraucanas, 6 BC Marans, 6 Welsummers. I would like one hen of each and the rest must go....

I may try to candle them tomorrow on day 9..... I don't have a projector lamp though...

I candled the Wyandottes and two of the three looked good but the third looked like a dud to my untrained eye so I took it outside and cracked it open. It was a nice looking non fertile egg without any foul smell....

I looked at about 4 of the Marans and I think one looked bad as well but I'm not willing to call it and crack it open.... I think some of them looked good but they are so dark that it is hard to tell....

I just did a day 13 candle and found 2 Marans that were not fertile. 1 Marans was questionable. That leaves 12 in the bator with one still questionable. I started with the 15 shipped eggs.

I did crack the two Marans in the sink and they were sterile looking without any chick growth and a very fragile yolk but no bad smell.....
