When did hens start keeping people?

So we are worried about what to do for winter here. We have been attempting a garden all year. Unfortunately, the bird that keeps us say's no to everything we try.
Do you have an idea that we can we can try? I think we might try zucchini as that is the worst vegetable imaginable to the chicken. Do you have a better idea?

Year 'round greens? Check out this thread on growing oat and barley sprouts indoors. But be forewarned, if you decide to follow along the rest of it, fix yourself a pot of coffee and a snack before you do ... oh, and you might want to use the "facilities" first, too. Otherwise, you may experience an unexpected ... errr ... warmth in your britches. Yup, it gets that funny quite frequently. On second thought, make that coffee a cold drink. It's a lot less painful when it snorts back out your nose. Don't say I didn't warn ya!

I had read this one previously, but not to the end. TY
I like the "year round greens" construct, I just have to let the chicken out to go eat this fabled thing called grass year round where we live. We only need rain here to have our greens.

Mine were afraid of pumpkins this year.

That was their favorite scratching box. A single pumpkin plant took it over and forced them out.

Awesome so I grow pumpkin with winter squashes right? I should be able to get free seeds smashing the neighbors pumpkin displays and plant on 1 Dec.

We just threw some in that box. The chickens pecked them apart, buried the seeds and fertilized them. It worked great.

try doing that when ya got more snow than sometimes a 4x4 can deal with, I decided on using a growing box covered with chicken wire so they cannot get at the roots just gotta figure out how many boxes I need to do of grains plus some veggies they seem to like in buckets , but that makes the guest bedroom none usable too, just change out the boxes and put em back under the light, to grow some more
