Hello - Our 3 Blue Swedish came this morning. I have had chickens for a few years now, but want to make double sure I am doing ok by these little cuties. They are in a ex-large dog crate, I put mesh along the sides so they wont pop out.
On one end I put straw/hay then I put down sawdust...
We are starting to get the winds from Sandy. I live in northern RI we have lots of pines that only have branches at the top. Our coop is in the midst of such trees.
When Irene hit last year I let the chickens out to find protection in the woods - but we got the hardest part of the storm during...
HI all-
I hardly ever post as I find answers searching, and my flock has been pretty darn healthy.
My flock usually free ranges in my yard or is in there huge pen. I have a mix of 7 hens and a nasty Welsumer rooster.
This summer I lost a hen to what I figured out later was egg bound. So...
Hi All,
Haven't posted in a really long time...but I am stumped.
I have 8 different hens and a Welsummer rooster. About a month ago they all stopped laying. Across the board- some olted very little, the rooster is finally getting his feathers back.
I checked them all, clean vents, no...
I was wondering if ti was normal for a rooster to sit in the nest boxes? He seems to go in the ones the hens don't use but still ????
Also, he swings his head in a figure 8 often....is he ok?
I am still working on him not being a meanie - but he still attacks my daughter and visitors. :-(
5 month old rooster that attacks people - and is always crowing.
Will his temperament change as he gets older or is he just a meanie for life?
He has gone after me a few times, but I chase him down and pick him up, then lay him on his back and take him away from the hens. I walka round for a...
She is not standing up or moving around like normal. She is sitting or standing and has her eyes closed, but she eating and drinking. She seems very lethargic.
I made a little molasses water for her and she drank some. When I put her down she kind of flopped over.
She is only a few pounds and...
Hi-
I have hens that are 5 months old. Some have been laying for a couple of weeks. My daughter boiled eggs last night and noticed that a few were double yolked.
Is that common?
Also, we have a Dominique that seems to be laying 2 eggs at a time - probable?
My light cochin seems to want to...
Ok so I now a rooster crows, but honestly he doesn't stop!!
He starts around 5.15am and just keeps going and going, he is quiet for a few hours in the afternoon.
If I leave him in the coop area he crows, if I let him out he crows.
Any ideas- I won't kill him so anything besides that. He is a...
Hello,
I ordered from Nature's Hatchery. With my ordered came these roos- I can not keep them all.
I believe they are sexlink- they are white and a few weeks old. Just starting to get feathers.
P/U would be great but am willing to meet you within 20 miles.
I am located in Burrillville, RI-...
Is that normal - to have what looks like a hemorrhoid with a pasty butt? I've clean it's butt as best as I could, will go back in a bit and clean some more. I just picked them up from the post office
Do I need to keep the heat on them until they feather out? It's been in the high 70s most days.
Also, I was thinking that the best way to introduce my 4 month olds to them is to put the babies in a dog crate in the chicken pen? I figured they could get use to seeing each other and hopefully not...
Hi
i've posted that I got a roo instead of a hen and I think I may keep him. It will depend on his manners :-)
In the same order as my roo my brother also has one. When we ordered we got all hens. I know that it isn't 100% sure that you won't get a roo but should or does the hatchery replace...
How do you know if the chick you purchased if a full bread?
I ordered from a hatchery. This is the first time I've had chickens so I know diddly-squat.
This is what I orderd,
Austrolarp
Benevelder
Brahma
Cochin
Domonique
Welsummer
Wyandotte
From pictures I've seen I think my Dom is not up...
Hello everyone-
Well the framing of the coop is done, the boards are waiting to be put on the outside. I plan to insulate and plywood the inside this summer.
The coop is 8x6 and almost this one, http://shedsusa.com/products/potting.asp , which I know is a potting shed :-)
Okay - question that...
Oh boy am I in big trouble!. I ordered chicks against the wishes, sort of, of my better half. He's building this fabulous coop for me - with all the grumblings too LOL
Now Gertie is a ROOSTER!!! I'm not sure what I am suppose to do with him - my daughter calls him Gary now LOL
I contacted the...
Hello all-
I just ordered another chick :-) I have 9 7/8 week olds, can I add the new chick, when it arrives, to them or not? Will it be ok if it is alone?
Thank you in advance
Cindy
Hello,
I was Home Depot the other day and saw this potting shed , http://shedsusa.com/products/potting.asp
I can't find a pic of the inside but where the clear plexi roof is I can put my roosts.
My concern is - will that be too cold for them in a new england winter? I can put a heat lamp...
Hello,
My chicks are about 4 weeks old, it's in the low 70s today and sunny. I was wondering if I could let them take a stroll outside - or will they get too cold? There brooder temp is about the same, but it is controlled and no slight breeze etc.
Thanks
