My gals are so greedy that they'll bite the hand that feeds them. They get all kinds of veggies, kale and collard greens, string beans, peas, corn...only AFTER they've finished their feed first, even if it takes a few days. It's not an everyday thing.
I'll boil some pasta and add some...
I've been reading over at the BA forum and several folks were showing pics of their hens that had much larger combs and wattles. Would that be because of different strains?
I like your strategy and that justifies STARTING with a prefab, knowing that it buys you time to modify and/or build a better coop that works for you. --BB
Here is an Austra-White advertised on MyPetChicken. Supposed, they are not as flighty as Leghorns but still good layers. I have four of them that are now 4-months old and just have a few splotches here and there like the pic below.
I would like to know how to tell the males from the females.
I got so frustrated looking at all those prefabs with their flimsy runs, an just gave up and decided to create my own from scratch.
I draw ALOT when ideas pop into my bean head. This is what I originally put on paper for my run...
and ended up with this...
even with my chicken observation...
These coop builders are still clueless. It seems like they build these things for people who don't have knowledge of power tools and lumber, or those who don't have the time or want to be bothered with building their own from scratch and want a pretty fu-fu coop in their back yard.
I thought...
I keep a mini food processor on the counter and give the boiled eggs a rough chop, then mix them in their wet feed, sometimes adding some peas and cut string beans. They practically lick the bowl...LOL!
I occasionally boil a boneless steak or pork chop, cut into strips, and throw it in the mix.
Well, that sucks big time. They need to get some open-minded, educated folks on that Council, maybe some farmers and people who want to be more self-sustaining, knowing where their food comes from.
Hopefully, they'll eventually come around and change some ordinances in your favor. If you...
I got my 12 chicks from MyPetChicken because what I wanted wasn't available locally, and most breeders don't sex day-olds.
I would order from them again because they accept small orders and their customer service is great, but somewhat disappointed that there could possibly be 4 roos in that...
I wrote Karin an extensive email about my two HUGE RIR roos that need to go ASAP. I also have a suspicious-looking BA and possibly an Austra-White that may need to go, but they mature at different rates, so they're safe for now.
That's why I like this website because you can find practically everything you need right here and can learn from other peoples' experiences.
I grew up on a farm as a kid back in the 60's and we had a lot of chickens, but didn't have to take care of them. Sorta kept the interest on the back...
I agree, and did my research for several years in advance before settling on the breeds I wanted. It's those people who buy those "Easter" chicks for little Johnny or Suzie and then don't know what to do with it when it gets bigger or possibly start crowing. It's not fair to chicks, or any pet...
