Julie,
You need my older pullet pictured. She could use darker yellow legs but if her ear lobes are a nice red and she has good type, she and your cockerel would make some awesome wheaten chicks. They're both very close. It's harder to tell on the cockerels/roosters if they're pure, those...
It's hard to say, In general, if they don't have even a hint of eyeliner or markings and they are pale pale yellow to creamy white, it's a pretty sure thing they are eWh (wheaten) but other genes can interrupt things and make them look different. That makes it really important to keep good...
Sure could be. There are even more genes that the Serama's have that can modify it a little but that's a pretty nice looking wheaten start. Do you have photo's of him when his very first wing feathers came in? That would be great to share, the wheatens can sometimes be sexed at that age...
Some wheaten and wheaten split chicks
You can see the difference in the down color that indicates how pure the chicks are for wheaten.
The older chick at the top is the most pure, there were no markings or shaded areas at all on this chick. The one in the lower left has the most markings and...
Yes, they do that like catwalk said. They may be 6 months old before they really start looking proportional then wow! They can look fantastic suddenly. That's why many breeders don't sell till they're past 6 months. That's a lot of time and commitment to assure you're getting quality when...
Very neat idea!
Mine start with a hamster water bottle then move up to a rabbit water bottle. The largest rabbit water bottle I have is a half gallon.
The tiny chicks do great with the hamster water bottle. I poked a hole in the side of a tin container that had these delicious cookies in...
Zsa Zsa,
She's in this pose all the time. I think I took more than 20 of her, trying to get the best shot and they were all the same and this little girl LOVES her photo taken
If anyone plans to buy blue Serama's in the spring, be sure to check with me, my friend Ruth has a very nice group to make some super nice blues this spring.
Here is a hen she got from me and she already has a nice blue cockerel and black hen.
Two day old chick, closest to pure wheaten I've hatched so far
At 24 hours old
At just 2 days old now and already showing coloring in the tips of the wings
My frizzled pullet laid her first egg today.
Here is China Doll
Here is her beau
First egg, might not be fertile but hoping. It's in the incubator :)
Hoping for several more, I'll hold a few to set 3 or 4 together
I agree but even keeping everything separate there are all sorts of things that can happen in a flock. I breed for happy, healthy animals with strong genetics and disease resistance. I don't have issues with keeping my turkeys, guineas and chickens together. Actually, we have a whole farm of...
I have all sorts of poultry, chickens, swans, guineas and turkeys and raise most of my chicks inside from hatching to the beginning of feathering and I have my African Grey parrot in here too. Never had an issue with anything. Keep things clean and your birds healthy and they should all be fine
I will be posting some Serama on the auction site where I sell my Araucana starting tonight. There will be some nice ones, I'm thinning the flock before it gets too wintry here so these won't be culls, not even my worst, just extra's and colors that won't fit into my plans. I'll post them as...
For the breeders in California, are you aware of the latest post office issues? No live animals can be shipped from CA to Missouri now. This was passed on to me by a friend in CA who I swap Araucana's with. This has something to do with a loss of the ability to fly them out.... the darndest...
I have another hen that will be an even better cross to the frizzled cockerel. This is Sahara. She was a young pullet here, she's much nicer now with good type and she definitely has the pumpkin diluter for cocopop
