    BLRW - still can't tell if it's a pullet or a cockerel

It is now 6 months old. The other three with same hatch date are crowing. This one hasn't crowed yet, but when I posted photos last month, the majority thought it was also a cockerel. I only have 4 so I'm really hoping this one is a pullet.

BLRW - Please tell me I have at least one pullet?!

Are either one of these a pullet? Or do you think both are cockerels? They are 5 months old. Same bird as above, perhaps a better picture? He's obviously a cockeral. I'm thinking boy. Please tell me this one at least is a girl!

What killed Monkey - my RIR?

She died this morning after I found her lying in the corner in the coop. She was a RIR, about 9 months old. I do have a heated water dish in the coop which was plugged in to an extension cord that runs outside the coop. She was lying right next to the extension cord. I examined the cord, it...

So confused . . . Barred Rocks or Dominiques?

We originally thought Bob and the 3 Bobettes were Plymouth Barred Rocks. But upon further study - the comb is not the right kind for barred rocks - correct? Should be a single comb for BR. Bob appears to have a rose comb, correct? And the bobettes? Is everyone really Dominiques...

Who lays a speckled brown egg?

I have one girl who lays a beautiful dark brown speckled egg. My options are barred rock, rir, white langshan, columbian wyandotte, dark cornish, or white crested polish. I'm leaning toward the rir. I also have some mutts that I got from my sister. She says it can't be one of those because...

    Hatchery or Breeder?

From what I have read on the boards, it seems the thought is that breeders will supply a chicken that is more true to the breed form than a hatchery? Is that right? I ask, not because I want to say one is better than the other, but because my son wants to start showing chickens in 4-H. He is...

My processor is closing - any others in eastern Iowa or southern Wis?

I had some chickens processed last fall for the first time and used Urbana Poultry Processing. They tasted sooo good we wanted to try meat chickens this spring. But I just got a letter in mail a week ago stating the Urbana is closing. I am in eastern Iowa, about an hour away from south...

Can chickens be traumatized? Seriously? Or, do Chickens Eat Snow?

I had a hen get killed by a hawk right next to the water can. Now no one else will drink any water. I know this because the water can is outside and the snow surrounding the water can is pristine white. Not a drop of poo to be seen. It has been like this for several days - since the hen got...

28 Weeks & Finally an Egg!

Don't know who laid it, but it's a good size for a first egg. The first egg is the brown one on the left. I put a leghorn egg in there for comparison. And with below zero temps and snow on the ground. What a good little chicken!

Who decapitates in broad daylight?! Hawks - that who

Found my sultan hen decapitated next to the water can. She was inside a fence, but close enough for something to grab her apparently. They only free range during daylight hours. So my question is, who does this during the day? We are out in the country and I haven't seen a stray dog in...

My chickens killed the rat from Nihm!

Yesterday I posted about a very smart rat who refused to be caught by any of the traps I put out for him. This morning I went in the coop and notice he had dug a tunnel in through the coop bedding. I began to berate the chickens, telling them they shouldn't allow a dirty rat in the coop to eat...

    Rat from Nihm

Anybody read that book as a child? About the really smart rats that escaped from a lab? Well, I have one living by the coop. I have been trying to get him for weeks. He won't touch the regular type rat traps - the ones that are like the standard mouse trap only bigger. We also tried what my...

Is my Brahma actually a Cochin?

Ok, I'm still new at this. I have what I thought was a light brahma, but after looking at photos online, I don't think it is a brahma. Is it actually a white cochin? Also, please please please tell me it is a pullet. She was born 06/01/09, so she is 6 months.

    Protein & egg laying

From reading another post I learned that treats may not be a good idea for those of us waiting for first eggs. My newest girls are 25 weeks (assorted - columbian wyandotte, RIR, BR, dark cornish, light and buff bramha, among others). They are getting layer feed, but I also give them kitchen...

If my girls are 22 weeks now - will I get any eggs this winter?

Just read a post that said if they are just reaching laying age this time of year there may not be any eggs until next spring! I have 4 1.5 year old leghorns and only get 1 - 3 eggs from those. I think maybe they are going into a molt? Anyway, we are down to 3 eggs! And we use more than that...

22 weeks and not a single egg!

I"m starting to lose hope. I ordered the special assorted from MMcM. So I have a RIR, 3 BR's, a few assorted polish, 2 bramahs, a sl wyandotte, dark cornish. Why are they not laying yet?

    GRRRRRR! Hawk killed #3!

Stupid, rotten, dang hawk. Kill #3 was a black polish cockerel. Heard the "we're scared" skwaking (sp?) today and ran outside - of course everyone was hiding but the hawk was no where to be seen. I searched and searched, finally gave up thinking I misinterpreted their skwaking. This evening...

How to keep roosters over the winter?

We purchased the straight run top hat special this summer from MMM. My son wants to show them next summer at the county fair, so we'd like to keep some roosters that are a match for the hens. We probably have about 5 or 6 roosters that we could keep so he could show a hen and rooster of each...
