We are taking our flock to their new home this afternoon. This is a difficult day.
I'd like to thank all of you for your thoughts and prayers, especially those who have PM'ed us with special words.
BYC has been a family of which I grew to depend on, rightfully so. I got speedy advice, my...
As some of you know, we have had to rehome our flock of 8. We are leaving the farm here in Iowa, to live with friends in Wisconsin.
We are truly blessed that Iowamom and her family are giving our 7 girls, and 1 guy, a new home. Thank you so much Iowamom, we would like to publicly recognize what...
We have to move off our farm here in Iowa and we need a home for our beloved little flock of 7 hens and 1 rooster.
All free of course with all waterers, feeders, heaters, etc.
Please let us know if you can help.
Thank you so very much.
We must leave our farm in Iowa, and I am in desperate need of a home for my 7 hens and 1 rooster. Free to good home, and all supplies will go with. (Feeders, waterers, etc.)
Please is there any help out there? We are obviously devastated. Finding a placement would be an answer to one of our...
Well, how do you spell relief??
Chicken saddles!
The girls were bald, and I wanted to get them covered before the skin got broken, bloody, and , well, you know, just plain ugly AND painful for the hens.
The saddles came today and besides being super duper functional, they are now stylin' as...
Do they? I have a SLW Rooster, 8 months old, sexually mature, who has lost his back feathers over the cold months. His back is not bald, there is signs of fuzzy new growth.
This is only on his back. His cape is gorgeous and beautiful tail (sickle) feathers, wings, etc. This feather loss is...
One of my Orpy hens has (or had) a runny poo that left the nice fluff on her rear covered with what is now hard and encrusted poo. No one else in the flock has any signs of this, and she is just fine otherwise. I suspect a little too much scratch is the culprit, so I'm cutting way back, and the...
Has anyone ever ordered saddles from mbldesigns in Arizona?
Or is anyone on BYC currently selling saddles?
Thanks in advance everybody, my girls are in urgent need of some protection.

My pullets (age 7 months) are all laying 1 egg per hen per day. (Even in our below zero temperatures, God Bless them).
When will they have their first molt, and how will this affect egg production?
I was told after they molt, they will lay only 1 egg per hen per week. Is this true?
TIA
Ma
Is there such a thing as a season when roosters are more active? Or do they, just...ahem....go at it all the time?
My rooster seems to be overactive! He's at it all day and night, and even in these sub-zero times!
Please enlighten me.................
Thanks!
It's been below zero here all week, now, today, it's 50 degrees!
So, I went to the coop, and decieded that "girls just wanna have fun."
I dug down into our deep litter bed, to the dirt floor. (It looked like a big bowl!)
Within seconds all the hens hit the dirt! There was dust and dirt flying...
My girls just started laying, and I'm getting eggs everyday now. Even in our freezing temperatures! My first egg was on Christmas Eve, and the wind chill was -15 out side the coop!
I go to the coop several times a day, and I'm getting to know about what time each hen lays. However, how long...
Yes, we got our first egg from one of our Orpington hens, 24 weeks to the day old. We have 4 SLW and 4 Orpies. Of them all, she was the last I figured to be first!
We almost culled her because we could not figure out why she wa so small compared to the others, and thought there might be a...
Awhile back I asked for you to list your top three mistakes, and I earned a wealth of information. thank you!
Now I ask for your top 3 all time BEST investments. Not home made, but something you actually paid money for. And, while we're at it, how about your all time WORST investment?
Our 15 wk old SLW Rooster just started crowing last week, a week ago today as a matter of fact. He has gotten better and better each day! Today 4 distinct syllables, and a wonderful deep baritone.
He starts his melodious crowing at exactly 1 hour before sunrise. (Fortunately for us, we are up...
Its my turn! I have waited and waited and still waited more, until I thought maybe our Roo was ga......um, confused.
But alas! Today at the crack of dawn...................we had crowing! Real honest to goodness crowing! (Can a person be this excited about this event?!)
And this afternoon...
So we went out this morning to carve the great pumpkin, its finally under 90 degrees...
We gave the pumpkin and seeds to the girls, and get out of the way!!
This has to be their most favorite thing we have ever given them! They are 13 wks old, and have had lots of stuff, but this was...
Well caught isn't exactly the right word, nailed it is more appropriate. It was dead I'm sure instantly. I just happened to be in the coop doing some morning house cleaning and it happened before my very eyes!
Then of course all 8 others were chasing her and running around like chickens with...
Being a person that has always learned more from my mistakes than from my accomplishments, I thought this would be an interesting querry.
What, if you had to make a list, are your top 3 mistakes you made in raising your chickens?
Or, things you would never do again?
