What should I see when I "candle" an egg. I'm not using an actual candle. I'm using a pretty strong flashlight. Also When should I start to see something? She's been on them for 1 week tomorrow.
We have a hen that we thought was broody. We brought her into the house and put her in a box. This was on Monday. We put 9 eggs under her just to see if she could hatch them. She laid an egg on Tuesday. Yesterday she did her buisness in the straw. We noticed it was real runny then saw all the...
Ever since BYC changed the forum, I've been having trouble getting into everything. It is about10 times slower than it used to be. I was wondering if anyone else was having the same problem and if anybody knows how to fix it.
How do I stop my roosters from raking my hens? Some of the girls don't have any feathers on their backs at all.
I'm afraid if I don't do anything, they will start to get all raw and bloody.
Somebody please help!
We would like to raise our own chicks but not really sure how to go about it. We've got a couple of broodies but only one I think would be the best. Do I need to keep her seperated from the others? Do I make a seperate pen for her? Will she roost? Do I need to put up a roost just for her? Please...
We've got a young EE,9 months old, and she hasn't laid an egg since October. Is that normal? The others have picked up their egglaying since molting, but Flicka hasn't. Is there anything we can do?
We were thinking about letting 1 of our Australorps set on some eggs just to see if we can get some chicks. Are we supposed to keep her seperated from'the others? What would happed if we just left her be and didn't check under her until 3 weeks later?
We have been leaving a 100 watt light bulb on in the coop for extra light and some warmth. It's been about 40 degrees all time in there. My question is, will the light, being left on all the time, hurt the egg production? We haven't gotten any more eggs (2 to 3) and I heard a rooster crowing...
Our EE hen hasn't laid an egg in about 2 months. We were figuring it is because she is molting plus the cold weather. This morning we were looking at her and noticed her comb is very pale. I suppose there are a hundred reasons why it is pale. Are there any obvious ones? Could she be egg bound?
When the temp started dropping and the days started getting shorter, our chickens quit laying. some of them quit laying altogether. We were getting between 8 and 11 eggs per day. Now we get 1 or 2 eggs daily. My EE hasn't laid an egg for about a month. I'm getting the coop wired for a light and...
It seems that ever since daylight savings time, some of our chickens completely quit laying. We went from 8 to 11 per day down to 1 to 5. We lost a nh red a while back and it seemed like after that they just shut down. The EE hasn't laid an egg for about 3 weeks. I know the loss of one and them...
We got the first snow of the season this morning. I went out to collect eggs. when I opened the door the chickens stayed in the coop. I left the door open for a little while to see if they would go outside and they wouldn't.We usually let them out the big door because the pop door opens into...
I've been reading a lot of these posts about breaking a hen from being broody. What happens if you want chicks from her down the road? Won't it be harder to get her to start setting again? One of our Australorps is fairly broody. She would sit all day, I think, if we let her. Next spring I would...
We just lost one of our NH Reds sometime this afternoon. One of our dogs found it. It was only about 40 feet from the coop. I don't know what killed her. I know it wasn't our dogs because they were with us all day in the truck.I didn'texamine it very close, but it kind of looked like she had a...
The reason I ask is, Last night I was watching the game between the Packers and the Falcons. I would like to know if anyone heard the same thing I did.
Around the end of the 3rd quarter, Cris Collingsworth(announcer) was yammering about something or another, and I could have sworn he said that...
I lfinally caught our big rooster, Earl and looked at his legs and feet. One of his legs looks like it's bleeding but it isn't. He's missing a nail on one of his toes and a nail on the other foot is split. My wife thinks he has a deadly disease and all the rest of the chickens are going to die...
A couple of our chickens are laying long eggs. What I mean is they are egg shaped but only stretched. It's mostly our EE but sometimes it's others. What causes this and will they grow out of it?
