Dear fellow BYCers,
We are moving out of state and we can't take our beloved chicken pets with us. Please come and buy them.
They are all pure breeds, acquired as hatching eggs for my Poultry hobby and they were hatched in our home in Jan - Mar 2011, so they are all within one year old...
I'm so proud of Smokey and had to show off his beautiful photo, which was selected for Picture of the Week today. YAY.
Smokey is a blue Cochin bantam. He was 5 months old when the photo was taken. He's a very good cockerel, assertive without mean-ness, gentle with the ladies, and always...
Offered is a like new Still Air Little Giant Incubator model number 9200. We used it only once, and now we don't need it anymore because we bought a cabinet incubator. The Little Giant gives you the very most bang for the buck when it comes to hatching. The original price for it was $64.69...
Hi all,
I just found the most incredible website that covers so many avian diseases, it is just a wonderful resource for us chicken people, which I thought I MUST share. I don't know if anyone else has posted this before, but I thought I'd just do it in case no one did.
It is by Cornell...
Today, I wasn't very surprised to see how funny my chickens can be. I discovered my chickens making themselves very happy, by joining in a huge pile of a Dust bath ORGY!! What else were you thinking?
Naturally, the Queen had the choice location for the dedicated dustbath area which I made for...
I moved this post over here, from the "Raising Chicks" section because it is food and nutrition related.
I just read another thread about baby chicks dying, and some have stated that it could be the lack of heat lamps, not having starter chick feed as reasons. That got me thinking, and I...
I just read another thread about baby chicks dying, and some have stated that it could be the lack of heat lamps, not having starter chick feed as reasons. That got me thinking, and I didn't want to hijack that thread.
Have you thought about what baby chicks used to eat for these past hundreds...
I am hereby proudly showing off my silkie babies hatching. I couldn't wait for them to hatch and as you hatchaholics can empathize with me, the wait is excruciating, but the first ones are finally here. YIPPEEE YAY
The first one that pipped yesterday 24 hours ago, is the first one to hatch...
Hi
I think this question was asked before, but I can't find the thread. My question is, do we need to rest shipped eggs before they go under a broody?
Thanks.
This morning, it was down in the 20s, and we had a thick cover of frost. If it was snow, the chickies would have stayed in their enclosure, but since it was just frost, they were out looking for sunny spots to sunbathe.
I brought them out oats in hot water, so they were very happy to warm up...
Hi,
This year, we build our fancy chicken house and enclosed run.
This is the first version of the house and run. Who knew, within 6 months, we would build an added extension enclosure to the back of the run with a slanting roof, but we were lazy and left the original roof flat. Bad Idea for...
Last week, my broody hatched out several Cochins, and my incubator hatched some more Silkies and 1 Mille Fleur Cochin for Christmas. Here are their pics. I thought some of my Christmas Hatch Buddies would like to see their updated pics, instead of wet chicks, they are all now fluffed up.
My...
Is it possible for us to mist spray the eggs in the incubator to up the humidity?
I had the understanding that the eggs itself should not come into contact with water during lockdown, but if we mist spray, wouldn't that cause the water droplets to condense on the eggs?
Hi All,
On what day should we abandon a hatch? Day 23? 24? 25?
I have a Hova Bator Genesis 1588, have 21 eggs in there, 6 hatched, and it is day 22. I haven't seen any pip or movement in the remaining 15 eggs, although they showed good development on Day 18 when I candled them.
What day...
Here are some pics of the 8 chicks we hatched on Thursday. They are now 2-3 days old and in that super cute stage, before they turn all weird and funky feathered.
We have 4 silkie chicks and 3 Large Fowl Cochin, and 1 EE.
Baby chicks in their brooder.
I have noticed that our chicks which we...
Hi Guys,
I know I'm guilty of this too, I just love hatching eggs now and it is so addictive. Coming this early 2011, I will have so many new chicks, I won't know what to do with em.
Put it this way, I have just hatched 8, I have 17 in 1 incubator due next week, another 24 incubator due...
We bought an incubator and 2 batches of eggs. 1 batch of silkie eggs, we put into the incubator and 1 batch of Cochin eggs, we put under our resident broody. She had been broody for a month before we had any eggs, so we figured, we might as well let her hatch some and see how things so. Today...
I have 2 batches of eggs.
4 in the incubator and 5 under a broody hen. I've heard chirping sounds from both batches. They are now due any moment, day 20-21.
Does it mean they'll hatch very very soon? like in the next day or two?
I got SO excited when I heard the sounds, this is the first...
Hi all,
I've noticed over time, that some BYC members still don't really know how to post photos to the forum, so I thought perhaps I could share my method. This is the method I am using to upload pics, and perhaps you can do it too with Facebook being the Source Location. I'm going to...
Many silkie folks have observed and reported that their silkies don't roost, as a matter of fact, they even hate ramps. Well, mine have shown the contrary. Here are some pics to illustrate my quirky little fellas, who DO like to roost at night with the big boys and girls. All these Silkies were...
