They wandered up to a friend's house on Friday, with no momma duck. She's kept them alive all weekend, but she works really long hours, so I'm going to give it a shot. Pointers?
My two hens, who will be a year old next month, have been laying most every day all winter. We added a third hen about a week ago, and since the day after adding her, nobody has laid an egg. Is it an adjustment to the new hen, or did the (evil) new hen teach them to lay outside the coop?
So, Oscar is 7 months old, and she must finally be laying. Yesterday, we had three eggs, and we only have two other chickens. Today, she was in the nesting box, and just a little later, there was another light brown egg. What is up with this? I was so excited about a blue or green egg. : (
I let my chickens out to free range about 7 a.m. - then put them up in their "tractor" at dark. This works out great, but I'm going to be gone for 4-5 days next week, and my mom will be coming to feed animals. I was thinking about putting them in my unused 10x10 chainlink, covered dog pen for...
Which is she? I bought her as a day old chick at the Co-op, and they said she was an Ameraucana. Is she even a she? As far as I can tell, she is not laying, even though the others (same age, different breeds) have been laying for 3-4 weeks. I wonder if she is just not quite right, lol. She...

My son got an egg from our chicken tractor at about 4 p.m. We ran out to do some errands and got back home about 5 p.m. I went out to feed the chickens and noticed Whiskey was missing. I checked the nesting box first, thinking maybe she was ready to lay. She was in the nesting box, beheaded...
They are so friendly these days. I have four, various breed, free ranging all day and in a coop at night. I am ready for some eggs! I have golf balls in the nest boxes.
We have a pond, about 100' across, full of frogs and with some fish. We had some wild ducks last year, but they only visited this year, then moved on. (I don't know if that was a reaction to the horses, the dogs, us, or something else.) I'd love to have ducks in the pond, but I don't want to...
I have four hens (well, pullets really) who are 20 weeks old. They are in a chicken tractor at night and free range from about 7 a.m. until dark, when they put themselves to bed, and I shut them in. In the last 7-10 days, three of the four have wandered off and spent an entire night outside...
I love my chicken coop/tractor, but it doesn't have roosts. The chickens have been sleeping in their nest boxes all along, which means a lot of cleaning, but it hasn't bothered me.....until now, when I'm expecting them to start laying. I can lock them in the tractor but pull up the ramp for a...
My girls are about 18 weeks, so we're hoping for eggs soon. I was reading about behaviors that indicate that they are close, but I don't know what this means.
It's rained so much and so hard that my chicken starter in my big feeder I just bought it all wet. They love it when I make a mash, but I'm guessing this will spoil and need to be dumped out?
I ordered a Speckled Sussex and a Dominique from a hatchery, to add to my Americauna and Black Australorpe. They were supposed to be the same age as my two (8 weeks) when I got them about four weeks ago. They were both way smaller than the two I'd had since they were a day old. The Dominique...
I have four pullets, all about three months old or a bit more. They are in a chicken tractor that we move around the yard. We've gotten a kennel for the dogs, so now we can let the chickens out some to free range. Any suggestions on how to handle it? How do I know they won't just all run...
I very sadly lost my buff orpington pullet at six weeks of age. She was the greatest of my chicks. We only had three, so I feel like I need to add one or two more, in case of any other problems. (Kilo was totally my fault - we had a bad storm, and when I went out to secure them in the upper...

We just had our pastures and yard limed by the big agricultural truck. I've moved the tractor to an area he didn't treat, but is lime dangerous for chicks? Mine are almost a month old.
Hi! I'm Katy. We have three chicks, about four weeks old, and are first time chicken owners. We have horses, dogs, and cats, and we felt like chickens would give out place that real farm feel. I'm loving them - they are so funny. We have Oscar, an Americauna, Echo, black australorpe, and...
