I have 2 hen-raised Barred Rock roos -- about 4 months old -- that I need to sell/trade. We already have a big rooster and do not need anymore for our small flock. When would be the best time to sell/trade them? Should I wait a couple more months or would it make any difference?
My goal...
This is the 2nd time this year that our broody Brown Cochin has hatched eggs. We've been letting her sit on some eggs that we didn't collect... just because. :) (We have plenty of eggs for our own needs!) Last time she hatched eggs -- about 3 months ago -- she hatched 4 out of 7/8 eggs and no...
We had to be out of town for a couple of weeks this month, so we just let our broody hen sit on her eggs instead of collecting like we normally do. Sure enough, we have some brand new chicks today and will probably have more as she's still sitting on some eggs.
My question is, should I get some...
We suspected one of our hens had gone broody when she would disappear all day but would always return for breakfast (meaning a predator hasn't gotten her). We finally found her in a well hidden spot amongst the blackberry bushes behind our backyard fence facing the remainder of our couple acres...
I adopted a 6-month-old rooster from a lady in town that had one too many roosters. She said he is a Wyandotte mix, but I wanted to see if that seems right based on his photo.
Thanks in advance!

I have a set of 3 Black Australorp's (at least that's what the feed store said they were) which I strongly suspect 1 is a roo.
The only reason I have some doubts is because the hens are growing their combs faster than he/she is. But unlike the 2 girls, he/she has the tan feet whereas the girls'...
Last night we lost all 8 of our 3 month old chicks to a predator. We are using a makeshift bunny hutch that is our coop and a predator (probably a raccoon or possum) jumped the fence into the run and dug underneath the fenced off part of the hutch and killed all of the babies. We found 2 dead...
My previous BR set had one much lighter than the other, which turned out to be a roo, so I wondered if my Ameraucana set will end up the same way.
The one in question is the one in focus, on the left.
Here is the other chick of that same breed, in focus on the bottom.
Just my luck, as soon as we culled the slightly aggressive roo, I had the funds to make a run (instead of 100% free range then my son would play outside and get flogged). Now that one of our hens got taken by a predator -- now down to 2 of 4 of my 1st flock -- I'm started to wonder if I need a...
My creativity has met its match!
I have the basic design already up to protect the hens but they always find a way out so I have to make it completely enclosed with a wire top too. The open part is their dirt run, but how do *I* get in and out (to feed and change water)?
Gray part is the roof...
None of our hens have gone broody so we're getting 6 new chicks on Feb 3rd from our local feed store, and am making more room in the coop/run to eventually house them. At what point would it be "safe" to introduce them without severe problems. The 2 remaining hens (out of 4, one being a roo and...
I tried, I really did. Tried so hard to just do it. I had him hanging by his feet, the knife was ready...
And I chickened out (pun intended).
No one has responded to my re-homing posts either. *sigh* I don't know what else to do, short of making my son give the rooster's favorite treats to the...
Other than my roo issue, I have a funny little free range Barred Rock hen that keeps changing her laying location on me. At first she wasn't free range but she is the ULTIMATE escape artist so I gave up and just let her lay under the tarp where we keep the dry straw for their coop changing. Then...
My rooster has always been pretty docile, compared to what I have read they CAN be like, but even so I am torn has to whether or not he'd be worth keeping around.
A little history is that this is my first flock of 4 and 1I ended up being a BR too. I didn't know she was a he until they were...
This morning I went out to feed the chickens (2 RIR hens, 1 BR hen, & 1 BR rooster) and get more firewood from the shed, when I noticed the Barred Rock hen -- named Hen Latifah -- was missing. She is the one who usually escapes over the short fencing around their coop so I looked around the...
I searched all over for this topic and couldn't find anything here or on Google, so forgive me if I am being repetitive!
Our (approx.) 17-18 week old rooster mounted one of the hens of the same age today, something he's never done before. I witnessed it out our kitchen window and I wondered if...
I was just informed by another board member that my biggest little girl could possibly be a boy! I figured I'd let the rest of the board members have a look and give their thoughts too...
When I got them at a local feed store, I was told that the two dark ones were Barred Rock. I don't know...
This is my first flock and I can't believe they're already about 10 weeks old!
For years I wanted to raise chickens but we never had the living conditions to do so... until this year. I'm so proud of my growing girls and they have taught me so much. So this thread is dedicated to my before &...
We have a great local feed store where I go my chicks and the owner is really nice and knows what he's doing... based on their behavior and eating tendencies he said, "Sounds like they're ready for scratch!" when I went to get MORE food for them (went through a 2.5lb starter bag in 4 days)...
About a week or so ago, I started noticing my 3-4 week chickens were starting to REALLY get their feathers and over the last 5 days just doubled in size! Of course this is expected but when they're your babies, you're just like, "Holy smokes... when I brought you home you were all just little...
