    Subscripton updates have stopped

Having a problem with the subscription to thread updates in that they've stopped coming in for a few days now. They used to come through hours later and out of order, even though I had them set to immediate. My iPad is not compatible with the text editor, but that Is a minor issue at this point.

    Question about tarry poop

I've got a 10 month old Amberlink pullet that has had what I would almost call pasty butt, with black, tarry looking poops. They stick to her feathers, but I have not seen anything wrong as far as worms or the like. She still lays an egg a day and seems healthy outside of this unsightly black...

    lethargic pullet

Tonight I noticed one of our golden comets looked a little off. She was shaking her head like she had a fly buzzing around. I sprayed them all down with poultry protector figuring she may have mites, but none were seen. I let them out to range and she was fine and scratching with the rest of...

Best type wall feeder to eliminate waste

I am thinking of changing to a wall feeder in the run but am not sure if I should build or buy. The round hanging feeder has been experiencing a lot of waste since the girls started to lay. A couple of the chickens are now starting to pick and choose the choicest morsels in their feed and are...

Soft shelled eggs layed from roost

Another one of our chickens has just started to lay, and is doing so overnight from the roost. The eggs are soft shelled because she has not had time to make fully hard ones. My question is what causes them to drop eggs when roosting? Today, I found the third egg since Saturday that was like...

    Comb flopping over

One of our Amberlink's combs is flopping over to one side. It looks healthy and bright n color with no pecking damage at all. She is the most mature of the three ALs and has the largest comb. Is this normal or should we be concerned?

    Rubber egg

Tonight we had the flock out before sunset to let them free range a bit. We saw one of the chickens did not look right and did not want to leave the run. We picked her up and she came out with her butt pulsing. She fluffed her feathers and we thought she was sick. That was until we saw her...

    Help! Red-swollen vent

What could this be. One of our amberlinks, the most mature looking at 16 weeks, had her butt facing me and she raised her tail feathers and I saw what looked like her insides protruding in a red bulge, then she retracted it and put down her tail feathers. She has not laid an egg yet. It is...

A girl in the nest box

I installed the nest boxes yesterday and put a couple of golf balls in each. This morning one of our Amber links was in the nest box when I went to let them out. I'm thinking they are getting close to laying, or at least getting the idea.

Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Most of the New Yorkers on the forum are either from central, western or way upstate, NY. I'm looking to start a thread with those of us from the southern zone. Figure there might be a few of us chickenheads this far downstate. I'm in Putnam county and thought by starting from Dutchess county...

    Chicken threw up

Don't know if this is anything wo worry about, but one of out chickens threw up a small bit of what looked like water. I happened to see it and got a little concerned. She appears to be fine, and I have never seen his before and wondered if it happens occasionally and if it is normal.

    combs and wattles growing!

Our golden comets and amberlinks are beginning to grow heavier combs and wattles this week, and they are turning red. Yippee! They are approaching 14 weeks by my best calculation. What else can we expect to see before laying starts, and is this an indicator that we are within weeks, or is...

    Excessive grit consumption

Lately our girls are eating a lot of the grit that is put out for them. I just put a bowl of grit out this morning after filling it yesterday and it is 3/4 gone in15 minutes. I use both sizes in the mix, chick and adult grit. We have 6 chickens and they have been going through a couple of...

    Does anyone supplement with Kelp?

Just ordered kelp to add to the feed for out 6 pullets. I heard it is a good thing to add. Has anyone had experience with kelp? I also gave them kefir mixed with oats for the first time tonight. I had been giving them organic yogurt but wanted to try the kefir.

    New Member from NY

Just had to join after lurking for a couple months and just today installing our chicken nipple water bucket. First, I have to thank this forum and its members for all the advice you provide. I ordered the nipples after seeing so many liking them, and man are they going to work out great. The...
