Kanat,
I am also in NC and having quite a battle with Northern Fowl Mites. We had red mites as well but built a new chicken house and burned the old one (take that!).
NFM is much better now, as I have dosed all chickens with 1% ivermectin at least once. But I'm still worried because I have...
WD40 is in the eggs, as well, and probably worse for you than the ivermectin. I would not put any petroleum products or solvents on my birds. Read the precautions on the label. If you aren't willing to spray it on your own skin, don't put it on your hens.
Ivermectin has at least been tested on...
this is exactly the problem I have with two of my hens - and none of the other seven or the roo - and the two who have it are mother and daughter! The young hen had a patch of what looked like broken-off feathers there for a while but quite suddenly (within the last two days) it's down to bare...
I found an abstract online from a veterinary med. journal saying that DE and sulphur in dust baths was 100% effective for getting ride of NFM. But I can only read the abstract since I don't subscribe ($400 a year!!) so I don't know how much. I would only do this temporarily as I know it can be...
I read up on this and some of the terms used in the article, and I think this would explain it in the case of young chicks, but not necessarily hens. If you look up Bursa of Fabricius, it is an organ that is present and active in chicks and helps build their immune system. But it dwindles away...
As someone of French ancestry I was attracted to the French Cuckoo Maran breed ... and, since the French slang for prostitute is the same as "hen" (poule) I looked up names of famous French courtesans and other shady ladies from history and literature. My original 12 were Nana, Satine, Fantine...
My two year old Cuckoo Maran hen Wanda may have had a brush with a predator the other day: hens are free range in my orchard, usually fine with our two dogs out, but one hen disappeared the other day-in the middle of the day, but the coyotes around here are getting bold- and on the same eve, I...
The yolks in the eggs laid by my Cuckoo Marans have always been very firm but recently they seem to be breaking more often when we put them in the pan. I wonder if this is something nutritional. The hens are freeranging a lot, and don't always eat a lot of their feed since they have so many...
not far as long as there's plenty to eat.
in winter mine come up to the house as they search vainly for greens and bugs, but in summer they are rarely more than 100 feet from the coop.
They are pretty smart and will catch on in just a few days to where they are safe.
Occasionally you will run across a hen or two who doesn't like to flock up. I had two like that in my original flock. They were always off by themselves and kept trying to sleep out in the orchard at night. after...
When I keep my flock in for any reason (they mostly free range), and when I am raising meat chickens in the tractor, I put a big bunch of grasses and weeds that they like to eat hanging from the roof of the pen. They will peck at it instead of each other.
My excellent little flock of Cuckoo Marans is going thru rather a hard patch. Here's the deal:
We lost several hens to various predators over about a six-month period, and one to illness or poisoning. I was down to 5 hens from my original 12 by spring. Then, we had three rounds of brooding and...
I am using a modified deep litter method. my coop (a former garden shed) has a dirt floor, covered with chicken wire. I put down a layer of plastic (to make it easier to pull the used litter out), then a deep layer of pine shavings. Every day I go in and toss handfuls of fresh pine shavings over...
I got these chickens (Cuckoo Marans) for meat and eggs last year, and much to my surprise, fell in love with them. I had no idea chickens had such personality and smarts.
We did raise the roosters in our run for meat, and I have to say I feel better eating a chicken that I know had a good life...
Thanks, that sets my mind at rest. I was coming to that conclusion from reading other posts, but still a little concerned.
I think they didn't get as much to eat as usual while I was gone, because I moisten their crumbles (which they love) and give them treats--bread and any tomatoes that have...
90% rubbing alcohol (avail at drug store) kills wasps, ants, roaches, etc. ON CONTACT. Pour it on the nest after dark. Should lnot hurt the chickns, and evaporates very quickly. You may have to do it more than one night to get the whole wasp nest.
With yellow jacket wasps, if you see where the...
I have two Cuckoo Maran hens raising chicks: one has five 5-wk olds, the other just one hen chick 3 weeks old (we had a sad time with her clutch).
I noticed tonight one of my 5-wk old hens had a slightly puffed out right side on the breast-crop area. I caught her and smoothed down her feathers...
Okay, I'm a newbie. After putting some ointment on her raw pink places and inspecting her close up I realize that her anus isn't distended--that's her tail tip. the other chickens pulled her tail feathers out, I guess. She is the low hen in the pecking order, poor thing.
She had a big healthy...
one of my little Cuckoo Marans is doing poorly. I noticed her vent area was very pink and swollen--took her out and washed her hiney; there was some feces on her feathers under the vent but it was not pasted shut. But it protrudes and looks swollen. I put her back in for a minute and watched her...
