I have 5 days till they need to go :(

Well, apparently you can't keep chickens here, and with regret I have to get rid of my 7 (plus 4 youngins), one of which is the nicest roo and falls asleep on your lap if you hold him. All around terrible day, visited in person by a police officer who informed us we have 5 days to get rid of...

Thinking of rehoming my favorite roo

Prettiest looking bird I could have wanted, he's an EE with white and black pattern and his hackles are so thick it's like a mane!! But lately he's been getting more and more aggressive and today he attacked my feet after "stalking" me for a good 5 mins. Really disappointed, he used to be pretty...

3 Day old chick, VERY sick,,,what do I do??

I have a little peep that I hatched out, he was fine till yesterday night when he started laying down and when I tried to pick him up he peeped REALLY loud and continously obviously in distress...and today there is mucus in his mouth and I can hear click-y breathing, also closed eyes. He's just...

    The first has pipped!!

This is my second hatch, and the first to be successful (this far)!! Noticed a bit of peeping this morning when I was making noise aka refilling the water dish and now there's an external pip!! It's sooooOOoo hard to not poke around with the eggs...but I'm just glad these are doing better than...

What happened to my eggs and how can I prevent it this time??

First off I have to give them credit for making it full term...they survived over a 24 hour power outage, below average temperatures, my newbie mistakes and out of 15, 8 made it to day 21...none hatched or begun until day 24 and only one made it to the external pip stage then died in the shell...

    Anyone ever hatch twins?

You know those HUUUGE eggs that you occasionally find that clearly have two yolks that you can see while candling? Has anyone ever hatched one? I'd be interested to know how the chicks actually hatch in that kind of situation...or is it just something that is better suited to being used as an...

Lockdown starts tomorrow for the 'hurricane' eggs

AKA my first hatch ever!! A week after incubation the hurricane hit (power was lost and I thought they were goners) but it looks like 7 or 8 out of my 15 original eggs are still alive. Candled today and they all have healthy veins and I swear I saw movement in a few of them..I can't wait to see...

Air cell at the wrong end of the egg?

Exactly what the title says, collected some more eggs today to make up for the losses during the power outage, and out of a dozen one of the green eggs had a teensy little chip at the pointed end so I put candle wax over it and now its in the incubator. But when I candled it I noticed the air...

Are they dead or just growing??

So, had an almost 24 hr power outage on Mon/Tues but I managed to keep the eggs at about 95-98 degrees, candled a few of the eggs after it was over and it looked like they were alright, but now I can't see anything...dunno if the flashlight isn't powerful enough or if they are dead. The eggs are...

How to Save Your Eggs if the Power Goes Out! (Without a generator or heat packs!)

Around 9pm yesterday we lost all power due to the Hurricane and I needed to do something so I didn't loose an entire clutch of eggs (9 days into the incubation!) and this tutorial is geared toward those who don't own a generator or 72hr heat packs. I was able to use what most people have in...

What to do about the storm, possible power outages & eggs?

I don't have a generator and I'm really worried that if the power goes out for any length of time my 15 little eggs that JUST got their visible embryos (1 week old now) are gonna die...it's a styrofoam incubator so I was thinking as soon as the power goes out (if it does) I'll keep the lid...

Going away for the weekend, will the eggs be alright?

Well I've gone off the deep end and decided to 'save' a few eggs from the hens to hatch, set up a makeshift incubator complete with digital thermometers and insulation etc, but I'm going away this weekend from Friday-Saturday and want to know if they'll be alright without any turning?? At most...

    Are these roosters?

Ok so I'm pretty much positive these two are, but what about the rest? The two are roos, right? Now this one which I've heard doing an odd sort of crowing And this which I think is also a roo Now what on EARTH is the deal with this one, I bought it with my bunch of EE's but it's a...

    REALLY sociable roo

...he follows me onto the porch, into the house and up the stairs to my room. Meanwhile the cats just kinda stare at him like "what the heck is that THING doing on our tree?!" He kept going to the highest point and trying to crow lol, I swear he thinks he's a parrot or something and belongs...

Well, I finally got them! My humble flock of 9 with entirely too many pictures!

Long story short, stuff happened and the whole chicken thing was put on hold, BUT after what, like two years? I finally got some featherfriends, 9 total. 8 Ameracaunas, and 1 leghorn, with only one rooster! Talk about good odds, I though I was gonna have like.....5 Arrived April 29th and...

Creating the chicken coop & run...

Got to work yesterday on fixing up the old dog kennel in the backyard. Hasn't been used in years and weeds started growing up thru the tiles...really wish I took some pix before, it's already looking better and more like it could be used for chickens.. Current plan for today is level the...

Surprise!! We're getting chickens! What species to get?

So this is my first post in a long while, because when I joined we really had no space for chickens and such... but yesterday my mom comes up and tells me she wants to get chickens this spring!!! Totally took me by surprise- I actually thought she was joking!! Turns out, this idea was spawned...

    Ceiling of the Run

Ok so I'm planning a big run for my chickens, and that would be a pain to put a wire roof over ALL of that, especially when the leaves start falling So if I clip the chickens' wings how high would the fence have to be to stop them from flying out or is a ceiling manditory?
