    Poor chick

Truthfully, I brought the chick inside to die in peace. I have two of the worst broodies in the world and this lone 8 hour old chick was a bloody mess on the floor of the coop. Day 3 has me refilling the jars of hot water to keep it warm, giving it water with an old syringe. One eye is gone, the...

    broody again

You would think after years of chickens, I would have seen it all. I have a speckled Sussex that went broody a while back ( and a poor broody she was, she smothered the first chick, one disappeare, and she has one left.) They had been sleeping on the roost together, but now she has decided to...

Feather changes in an older roo

I have a 6 year old hatchery white leghorn roo that has had a change in the texture of his feathers. A year or so ago his feather had the normal smooth surface of a leghorn, now most of his feather are fluffy like a mixed breed silkie. Is this a normal happening? I have been able to find info...

    Re-integrating post broody hen.

I have had to segregate a hen to a corner of my duck pen since some hen cannibalized one of the pekin duck eggs she is sitting on. Hatch day is tomorrow and life if crazy in the duck pen too. She is in a fenced off area with a pair of eight week old ducks that are being terrorized by the grown...

    Pekin behaviors

In March I got a turkey and a pair of Pekins and a pair of runner ducks. All was good, I even got M/F pairs of each. They where all in one coop. Along came the Valley fire and my last step was to open the coops as I left. When I was able to come home a week later( yes I was very luck) I had lost...

Fattening up a dual purpose roo

I hatched a couple of BR beginning of oct. I decided to keep the hen and process the roo. This morning I caught the roo and tossed him in the broody coop to try and fatten him up. Any advice on how to feed him and if he even has a chance of being tender. All of the other Roos I have processed...

    scared?? roo

I recently got a BR roo. He is hatchery stock and 7 months old. He has the 2 BR hens for his own. He has only now just started free ranging and at sundown waits for the hens to go into the coop before he will go in. I have another roo in the coop next door that he likes to have crow off's...

Giving hens to a new roo??

I traded for a BR roo and I am planning on giving him my 2 BR hens. I am planning to hatch the eggs for meat/egg use. Is there anything I need to watch out for when I transfer the two hens from the flock to the new roo? These two birds are the top of the pecking order with the current group.

    fertility after brooding

My EE (my only green egg layer) hatched her brood about 4 weeks ago and has started laying again about 1 week ago. I want to start a batch in the incubator but I am wondering about using her eggs. I have not see the roo breed her. What are the chances that she is fertile?

wondering about dual purpose mutts ...

After being gone for a long weekend, and having a glut of eggs. I am going to put the couple of dozen eggs in my homemade incubator and hatch them. The roo is a hatchery white leghorn and the girls are leghorn, EE, BR. Any guess how to get them to gain weight fast?

My 1st broody hatch so far....

3 weeks ago today I let my broody EE keep a clutch of 2 days eggs from my flock. Started with 9 eggs, lost 3 early on. (1 missing, 1 cracked and 1 I removed by mistake. The rest of the girls keep trying to lay in her box.) She is brooding in the main coop, in a separate box. My goal is to try...

reflecting on my first year of chickens...

Last spring I got 6 hatchery white leghorns and they were so much funny I got 6 more, a mix of breeds. The wait for the first eggs took forever, but what a happy day that was. My DH built me an open air coop and then nesting boxes and was always on hand to tweak the plan for what we needed. It...

Set eggs in my homemade bator yesterday

First time for me too. It is in my classroom (preschool) and will come home on Friday for Spring Break. It is a still air incubator and holding temp between 97- 101. I put in a dozen eggs and would love if even half make it. Next I am going to make a candling device so that I can check the...

    Lost 2 yesterday :(

I think a roaming dog got one of my leghorns and my black cochin yesterday. We found the cochin intact but missing a lot of feather and a trail of white feathers. I never was sure which of the eggs were hers (4 shades of brown) but I am going to try and hatch from the one in the frig. I...

    transporting incubating eggs

Has anyone had to transport their eggs during incubation? I am thinking I need to take the incubator home during spring break. Does it just lower the % of hatch?

want to build a bator today for my classroom but...

I am worried about not being able to turn the eggs enough. I am only at school for 5 or 6 hours. Will I still have any success with hatching? Also some pict of peoples homemade 'bators do not have turners. Is it OK to open the door to turn the eggs. And one more I only have a digital...

    Julia Child here I come

My small EE rooster wrote his death sentence last week when he turned into a fighter. We did the deed yesterday. My DH did the dirty deed, he reports that it is better to be more vicious, that it is more humane, I plucked and he gutted and I get to cook. A scrawny bird with a fair amount of...

    pesty rooster

My beta roo has taken to bugging my pullets as they are settling down to lay. The girls are trying out a new spot made in a bale of hay that I opened. He stands on them or takes the spot like he is going to lay. Any clue why he is doing this?
