    Egg thief

I came home last night to get eggs, expecting about 18, to fine 0. I know there were a few yesterday already, b/c when I went out to let the chickens out to range and feed/water them, there were about 5 in boxes. I have a guard dog who I don't think can fit in the chicken door, and 2 cats. The...

    Poopy butts

I have several chickens with poop accumulating on their butts. What is going on? Its too cold to give them a bath (-20F this morning). I don't notice that any of the poops look runny.

Increasing daylight and some odd light related behavior

I live in Montana and our daylight is dwindling. I put a light with a timer to come on at 6 am and give them a couple extra hours, but they are going to bed 2 hours before sunset, so it really didn't make a difference. Should I have it come on at night too? Also, its been pretty cold. -5F for...

2 dead chickens, several molting, some of them with pale combs

About 4 weeks ago, one of our chicks died, unexpectedly, really without warning. She was about 20 weeks old. She was an unknown mixed breed and she spent a lot of time shivering. Then, 2 days ago, the other chicken of the same "breed" died. We treated for mites about 2 weeks ago, and then a...

Cold weather, all cooped up, how much heat, etc etc

We have a really small coop (less than the recommended 4 sq ft per bird) with a really large run (10 sq ft per bird) and a barn. We got our chickens this spring and they spend a tiny amount of time in the coop. Its insulated (as of yesterday--Yay!!!). The run is covered and has a wooden wall on...

Help!!! What is going on with my chickens?

We got our first chickens this spring. Everything was great--chickens were healthy, they laid awesome, etc, etc. We also had chicks. We kept them separate from the chickens and intro'd them and it went great! Then they stopped laying (the chickens). The pullets just started laying. The hens lost...

I'm thinking mites (shudder). Where do I get the stuff to treat it?

I live in the country--like 80 miles from ANYThing. I need to order online. I'm not sure what I'm going to order yet, but I'm pretty sure its mites. We have lots of dust for them to bathe in, so I'm a little perplexed. My husband will spread ash and make an ash bath right next to the coop. I...

    Low egg production?

I bought three 8 month old pullets, one 2 yo hen, and one hen I don't know the age of (she was the mother hen to 5 chicks that I purchased, and she came free with them). At most this summer I got 4 eggs a day, but that was very inconsistent. I am now getting 1 or 2 eggs a day, sometimes 3. I...

    Possible prolapse, eggs shellless

I'm not sure what's been going on. The past 3 days I've had shellless eggs in my next box, I suspect from one hen, as the other eggs have been fine with nice hard shells. Today, one of the hens has something hanging out of her. Here's a picture. I am VERY new to chickens.

    Questions about hen with chicks

I have a hen with 5 chicks. They are about 5.5 weeks old right now. Three look to be fully feathered, 1 isn't too far behind, and the fifth is not feathered at all and I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with her (she can't get into the next by herself and she's always getting lost, but I...

They won't use the ladder to the roosts and therefore, can't roost

We changed our roost set up so we could have a poop board and they only way to get to the roosts is by way of a chicken ladder, but they refuse to use it, so they are lost. I even put one chicken on the ladder and she flew right back down. What should I do?

    Cold weather--really cold weather

We have about 6 months of winter type temperatures and 3 months of really nice summer. The other 3 months can kinda go either way. We have a smallish coop (6x6), and we want to have at least 12 chickens in that space. I think we are going to try to increase the space by making the roosts really...

New to this and worried about egg laying

I posted a few days ago about my chickens laying in random places and/or eating eggs. I watched one hen drop an egg in the barn (not the coop) while they were free ranging and they all rushed to her to eat it. They ate it within seconds. I never saw whether or not it had a shell. I just got the...

    Compost

Is there a compost thread? I feel overrun by manure--we have goats, who spend a good part of their day in the barn all winter long (and its a long winter here), where we've use the deep bedding method with straw for the past 2 winters, and now we have chickens and we plan to use pine shavings...

    Laying/nesting in random places

My chickens are free ranging, at least part of the time, but the time is irregular based on when we're home. They WERE laying eggs in their nesting boxes. Now they've dropped them in random places, AND they've eaten a couple of them. What do I do?

Are any of these cockerels? See post #10 *Added an update on Oct 18*

I updated pictures on page 3!! Thanks for the help! I have 5 chicks, and thought I got all their pictures, but I would like to at least know what these are. They came with the Mama Hen. I just want to know what they are and whether any of them will lay eggs! They are obviously mixed!

Chicks with pullets, feeding and housing questions, along with a cat q

Hi! I FINALLY have my coop. Dh got it built on Mother's Day and I am picking up chicks and chickens tomorrow. I will have a mother hen with 10 chicks, 3 pullets (8mo) and 1 other chicken (2yo), as well as a rooster. My coop is chick pro of with a run that is probably chick proof, but I'm not...

    Hi from Montana

Hi there! I'm getting chickens!!!! Not right now but sometime soon. I have tons of questions--I'm not even sure what breed or how many I need! It gets super cold here for long stretches (-40F and sometimes even colder!) and we have very short summers. I'm looking forward to getting to know all...
