Even with "Breeder Quality" Dominique stock, you can still get an occasional single comb.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. I get on BYC about once a week. For those who do not know, I remarried in January, to my high school sweetheart. We are still at the same place. Sherry moved here from Duchesne, Utah, and brought her Blue Ameraucana and two dogs. LOL. Between the FB group, home...

Where in Utah? My wife and I were just there last weekend, we were both born and raised there, and have kids and grandkids in Tooele and Duchesne. Heading back that way in 2 weeks after taking my youngest to Idaho for school.

    Cabinet incubator design question

Mine has a fan. I will be doing the following: 1. go to a lower wattage bulb set 2. installing a heat shield 3 if the above two don't work, I will add another fan. 4. If that doesn't work, i will move the heat bulbs to the bottom.

    Cabinet incubator design question

First off, I'm not new at this....Ive been using a GQF styrofoam incuabor for years with great hatches. Last summer I obtained a homemade incubator. Cabinet style. wood frame with 3 levels, each capable of holding two auto turners, for a total of 6 turners or 252 eggs. My problem is that i...

    My DIY incubator

Get another thermometer and check the temperataure at each tray level. I am currently having problems with mine, the temperatures vary greatly between levels. Mine has light bulbs near the top; I was thinking of moving them to the bottom and seeing if that helps. Also going to add another fan.

Candled Saturday evening and after 7 days. 61% developing. Threw 10 out. Non-starters. Put an additional 30 in the incubator last night. For eggs collected in early February, 61% isn't too bad I think., especially when compared to last year. We kept 14 Dominique hens/pullets and one Cockerel...

    So....talk about.....CANCER SUPPORT THREAD !!

Well...... it's been a month since Beth Cazier Smith passed. We are finally getting into some sort of routine without her. It's been a little disconcerting. Things that I would normally discuss with her that I can't now. Those things throw me off a bit. We ALWAYS talked about spending plans and...

    Dominique Thread!

Last year 2013, nearly 1/2 of my dom chicks had single combs. This year none. And yes, they are all Dominiques. The single comb gene is in my flock, which is OK, as single comb cockerels are delicious. They are all Dominiques, though I don't use any single combed birds in my breeding program...

    Dominique Thread!

Very true. I wouldnt want a Dom hen to lay more than 200 eggs over the course of a year. I don't think she could handle it. And we don't want the Dom hens to start looking like a barred Leghorn either....
