Neighbors are weird, the landlord is the one who told us this, but this is the same guy who sits in his car blaring music at 2am.
Hah, funny, I got Pekins cause I thought or read some bad info that they were the LEAST chatty of all ducks. darn.
A work in progress... thanks,
Pete
Usually around 8am after I've watered the garden and let the dogs (who don't even care about the ducks of chicks)
out. But I'm home til 10am usually so I can always let them out later, but sometimes at 6am when they get
up is when they quack.
And i HATE to think I am THAT neighbor who is...
So I'm doing the urban farming thing, have 3 4-month old Pekin Hens and 3 4-month old Buff Orp Hens.
They all free range in my yard during the day, and at night I coop them up with an attached run, lots of
space for them to hang out eat, drink, etc...
Thing is I have neighbors on either side of...
I free range/forage my 3 Buff hens... I don't care much about egg production, I just like having them around and having them as a hobby.
Luckily I work at a restaurant that often throws away, at the end of a day, fruits, veggies, and cold hard nasty grits. My girls gobble them up
scratch around...
Good afternoon, longtime since I last posted. Had my Pekins and Buffs for 2 months now, everything is going real well.
One Pekin was slow to walk, fed her some food high in niacin and now she seems fine.
Question, as an Uptown New Orleans resident, I have a nice sized backyard, about...
Living in Louisiana, and having 3 two month old Pekins and 3 two month old Buffs, I have a nice coop, but I regularly let them sleep outside in
my fenced backyard. So far no major issues, no signs of anything looking to eat them either. My dogs have the run of the yard as does an outdoor
cat, my...
I have 3 Pekin hens, today in the backyard, all 3 were swimming. One just kept laying in the pool.
Thought she was caught on something. I removed her from pool, and laid her on the ground.
Figured she'd get up and waddle off... but no, she just fell flat, like her left leg wasn't working.
No...
I work in a New Orleans restaurant.
I try my best to re-use almost any food scraps we have.
They LOVE them some watermelon. Any melon, down to the rind.
Also blackberries.
I'm going to try grits and hashbrowns today.
I tried celery and green onions, they didn't take to them well.

Thanks... well, like I said, right now the ducks and chicks are both 2 weeks old, though the ducks are growing sooo fast.
I've got a run and a covered coop all set up, and the chicks are in my shed, so maybe it is time to separate them.
See how it works out.
Thanks,
Pete
Raising my chicks with recent Pekin duck hatchlings... of course the ducks make a mess, play in their water etc...
which makes my chicks wet almost all the time. It is 90 out here in New Orleans, so I'm not worried about
temps, what else should I worry about... maybe fungus? I could separate...
Thanks for all the advice about recycling food waste. I work at a local New Orleans restaurant, you wouldn't
believe what we throw away. I've been saving the chicken breasts and spinach and carrots that they
try and toss and use it to make my own homemade dog food. My two dogs seem super happy...
My Pekins came with little brown right leg bracelets. They look like they'll expand and fall
off as the ducks grow, but I was wondering why, and should I remove them myself?

So I'm an idiot, 5-day old chicks, hanging out in my backyard, eating on some bugs, me watching over them.
No big deal, pretty 95-degree weather... one of my dogs got close to sniff, trying to acclimate dogs to
the chicks in hopes they'll eventually share the yard... I know, how Disney of me...
Same problem with my 5-day old. Buff Orp, the other two dart about all over.
This one, she got hit with a dog paw, who was sniffing, chirped, seems to be
okay, sequestered her, leave food, water, guess I'll check in the AM.
Hope it isn;t anything internal.
Hello fellow-Louisianans...
Question: my backyard, here in New Orleans, is a nice size, I have herb and veggie gardens, some fruit trees, and a compost pile
as well as a can-o-worms. Now I've got 3 Pekins and 3 Buff Orp hens. I recycle most of my food scraps in one or both of my compost...
We've, so far, brought them outside to waddle around in the grass for a few minutes, but all while we're
watching.
For the next month or so I figured no free ranging, just in an outdoor pen while one of us is outside
to watch/scare away predators.

New Orleans chick/duck raiser, total newby.
3 Buff Orp hens and 3 Pekins... 5 days old, temps here are nice and warm, no real need
for a heat lamp. Right now all 6 are chilling out in my shed in a brooder, eating, drinking,
having a merry old time... I have a coop ready for them and a...
