I took the fan out, and thought I wired it back up correctly, but it started smelling like something was burning when I plugged it in, so I'm waiting for the replacement. It's an old incubator, new-to-me and I planned on eventually replacing the older parts. I just wasn't planning on now being...
The fan in my hatcher just quit working. Actually it stopped spinning and started smoking. Of course, today is lockdown for a new batch. Just ordered a new fan assembly but won't be here in time for this hatch. Guess I'll be hand turning all the others in the incubator. Blech. I got a...
Donna - Here are your CCL x leghorn chicks! 2 blacks and 2 yellows. The blacks are tiny! They almost look like bantams.
I also got 3 cuckoo marans. Can they be sexed at hatch? 2 have a small/clear yellow spot and one has a bigger messier spot.
Yes, these will be perfect! It will be great. I ended up with a brown leghorn boy from a few I pullet out of the feedstore "pullet" bin. So the roo will be a brown leghorn, and with these girls, should be super sex-link blue egg layers!
I have one little dark chick with a few spots of...
I think the fan is loose and rattling a bit. It's quieter when I put a brick on the top, to weigh the case down. It seems to be holding temp and humidity well. The top is clear, so it's nice to be able to see all the eggs.
Have you set these before, or are mine the first batch?
I will! It's also the first test run of my new-to-me old Roll-X incubator/hatcher. That sucker is noisy! I'm hoping that once I replace the screws and nuts it will tighten down and be quieter.
If the Roo was the RIR and the Hen the White Rock, then they're sexlinks, with darker chicks being girls. Otherwise they're going to be a messy mix of red, buff, cream and white.
I have to go to Walmart today, so I'll look for the Odoban. The Oxine I found online was $25 + $10 in shipping. I totally agree, it sounds amazing. It's too bad they only sell it by the gallon. A smaller size would cost less to ship.
Just looked up the price for a gallon of oxine. I can't spend $35 on a gallon of cleaner for the chickens right now, so I'll work with the vinegar. Sounds like great stuff though.
Thanks for all the suggestions -
This is the incubator -
It's heavy duty plastic. It's now soaking with vinegar in it - I had to dilute the vinegar, I only had about a 1/2 gallon. I'll pick up more tomorrow. The smell is everywhere. Even the hardware cloth that sits inside...
So I tried to clean the base of the incubator.
First I just washed it with Dawn. Then let it soak a bit.
then rinsed.
Then Clorox clean up.
then rinsed
Then magic eraser.
then rinsed
Then oxyclean. Both as a paste scrubbed on and a soak.
then rinsed.
Now it's sitting with a towel with...
None of the wiring is frayed. A few of the screws are rusted or corroded. It needs cleaned badly. It reeks of stale cigarette smoke. Should I clean what I can reach, or take it all apart and hope it works when I put it back together?
