Another thing you could cull for at an early age is size. If you have some that are falling behind you can go ahead and get rid of them. I had three( brahmas ) today that were three weeks old and looked more like the one to two week olds with more feathers. Got the hatchet out for them.
If I had the room I'd take one off your hands! I think when I get the space for another coop I will have one that I can just put a bunch of breeds in. I want so many but I've been told not to breed too many. A black Langshan Cock would be at the top of my list.
Better learn to get patient. All of the Asiatic breeds take forever to get to the point of being safe to cull. Plus most can't be shown until they are 10+ months old.
These hens have experience so I think part of it is the combination of them not wanting to let them practice and the boys not just showing them who's boss. The one boy will just show them who's boss but the other just likes to sweet talk them and I'm not sure what happens after that...
X2. I've started collecting eggs after giving them a few weeks off since most of the eggs weren't getting fertilized. I couldn't quite tell but I think my one egg was fertile yesterday. Hopefully my one boy finally has figured out what to do.
I clean mine out completely every 5 or so days. I hate it when my coops get dirty. Plus the cleaner the coop the less likely they will get sick. Now for the non show/breeder birds. I have a tendency to let the coop get a little a dirtier since they don't need to be in top condition at the moment.
The first batch of hens that you want in show condition would need to be kept away from any roosters. They will obviously trash their feathers. Once they are separated pull any broken/damaged feathers so fresh feathers will grow in. Show birds need a slightly different diet. Give them BOSS to...
