I always encourage people to ask lots of questions before they buy eggs - I agree with Jerryse, you had a good hatch rate and green tinted eggs are not unusual for lavenders. Some questions you may want to ask before buying eggs of any breed are
1. how long have you been breeding this breed
2...
I'm not sure what Jerryse used - Figandgoose (happymtn) used a very light egg laying cuckoo maran - I believe its been about 4 generations back in regards to my current generation - but it may have been further back than that.
feather quality is much better - no fretting at all - still working on egg color though
I suppose we could use single barring factor roosters- we've got that now. I'll be going some test breeding in the fall with one cuckoo rooster over a lavender hen and the other over a cuckoo hen - I'll...
I guess it would sex linking - double barring factor cuckoo lavender male over lavender hen - males will have an obvious white dot on the head, females won't
I'm loving them as a project because I can have several different looking birds in the same pen together, I have black splits, solid Lavender, Lavender Cuckoo and Black and White Cuckoo. Makes it much easier to work on a project when you don't have to invest in different pens. I will probably...
I'm loving these cuckoo patterned lavenders! I'm hoping to keep a nice mix of both these and the regular lavenders in my flock... but I love how these look.
I wing banded a few birds this year - it was very easy and its nice for record keeping because each band has a number on it. I actually am even looking into getting ones with a bar code that can be scanned with a cell phone. If I can get someone to write a chicken breeding app for me I would...
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong -
If you have a black split to blue you don't want to breed that with a lavender because blue and lavender are two different genetics. If the bird is a solid black - that would be ok - but I don't think you can tell if its solid black or black split to Blue
oh no! I hope he has a full recovery. I had a tom turkey get a string wrapped around his neck. Its was a fine string so I didn't notice it at first, just noticed he was standing in the same spot for an hour before I investigated further. He survived and did ok, but I think there was some...
Kaybee - I just had odd chicks hatch like that too - my adult birds are lavender, cuckoo lavender and cuckoo - somehow I hatch out two chicks that looked like they were going to be cuckoo lavender at hatch.. but they are feathering out white... and I don't know how this happened - but I also...
I believe what you are talking about is "fretting", which is a problem with lavenders. That is why it is recommended that you breed lavenders to top quality blacks and incorporate split lavender birds into your flock. This will help improve the feather quality.
I don't know how far east in KY you are, but I'm in Charleston WV and I go to Ashland KY a lot for work. I'd be glad to hatch out some lavenders for you.
are you putting any electrolytes in their water ? If not, sometimes even a little sugar will help with some energy. also, non filtered apple cider vinegar
