    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

while candling, I tilted gently the egg and watched the air cell move towards the middle of the egg. I did not tilt much as I didn't want it to travel, just enough to tell it was moving away from the end.

Hatch Wrap up everything is cleaned and sterilized for the next hatch, which by the time i get back from vacation will most likely be a November hatch date. But on to the eggs. paid for 18 CCL eggs and received 24. all arrived in great condition and only one had a detached air cell. And...

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

So today is day 22. I decided to candle the eggs. Well needles to say the incubator is now getting ready to be cleaned. So 5 chicks out of 24 eggs. the last chick I was worried about did not make it and when I opened it up, their was a deformity as in the intestines never were enclosed by skin.

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

what a time for the power to go out. So I am in town, half an hour away, Mom is home alone, feeling well enough after open heart surgery for me to go do a serious supply run. and she calls me because she had to switch over to her tanked oxygen because the power has been off for the past hour...

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

It's exhausting wiggling out of a tight confine. Woke up at 10 to 3 for some odd reason and looked over and spotted this. Several eggs that were rocking violently yesterday had stopped moving by bedtime and I was concerned, but this morning I have noticed they have pipped. An hour and a half...

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

I kept waking up because I thought I heard chirping but every time I checked nothing. Just a little bit ago I realized that the platen still being in the incubator would most likely cause more problems than not so quickly removed it and discovered I have 1 pipped, one where the shell is cracked...

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

well officially halfway through day 17. So I weighed all the eggs and candled again Removed 4 more due to deaths of embryo some time back it looks like. I have dropped my temp from 100.0F to 99.5F and in the process of raising humidity to 70%. ( all according to note included with shipped...

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

Okay day 14 here 2 eggs quiet as I spotted a blood ring in one and nothing in the other, (it was all yellow and clear) Most you can only just make out the air cell, they are dark through and through otherwise. Though a couple are about 3/4 dark all around and they still had possible embryo /...

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

And that right there proves that there is no universal one step recipe for incubation. I doubt I could ever dry incubate, not with our normal humidity in the low teens. Everyone's climate is different which will effect how you incubate. Hence the reason why I am once again keeping meticulous...

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

unless you are dry incubating, the humidity should never double but only go up maybe 20% if you run your humidity level at 50% during the first 18 days. An interesting chart I am referencing from an article from the Mississippi State University for meat bird hatcheries states that at 100 degree...

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

yeah, that is my mistake, my brain said one thing my fingers typed another. Edited But it seems my fingers were correct from several of the studies I re-referenced just now. Because when an egg goes into lockdown, you should not be opening the incubator up again to weigh eggs or disturb them

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

Roughly, about 4 percent in 7 days. that is based off of a calculation of needing to lose 13 percent by lockdown

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

So it's day 7 and I candled and weighed this morning. Out of 24 eggs 22 of them have lost an average 2 grams of weight. 2 of them have lost 1 gram or have lost nothing. these two also show the least development, so i expect them to quit by day 18. About half have well developed vein systems...

    SEPTEMBER HATCH-A-LONG!!!

just finished an article from the Brinsea website that actually states that a daily cool off period will increase hatching rate. the premise is that in nature a hen will get up from the nest for up to half an hour to an hour and the eggs will cool slightly. Interesting theory and the study...
