➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

i’m still in very early stages....nowhere near actual “breeding” program as I have yet to even see my first egg. and I currently keep all of my quail together (but because of age/color) I know the source of the different birds. Hubby actually laughed at me for even watching the videos on genetics today. the recommendation to vary my stock and breed for both size and color is intriguing however. with that being said, i looked at 15 jmf meatmaker, 15 jumbo recessive white, and 15 celadon from kc as next possible hatch. (also couldn’t resist possibly adding 24 chukar eggs)

Throw in pearls and you have my total wishlist too! Although I can't get the two former until I have more space for the critters to roam outside.

The maybe-pearl sprouted so much gold overnight I can barely tell him apart from the others now :barnie

Awe, I lost a pullet! I don’t know any other reason than a broken neck.

Chucker's are a whole other ball game!

My last two generations have been 100% unrelated (to my knowledge/from different sources) , and my flock is an intense mix of traits right now, but I have had the most satisfying feeling of hitting on pairings that just work this time and are producing really really attractive, fast growing, typey individuals. Those birds are going to start to be bred more heavily into certain branches of my flock.
Excellent! If you don't keep track....then you'll never know what you have or where it came from or why a problem arose without records. :old

on a side note: I did do a new “inventory” of my chickens this weekend. I re-homed 2 of my silkie pullets with a friend. I now have 4 silkie, 5 EE (3 lay green and 2 peach), 2 RIR, 3 BA, and my SS (not laying yet). Today I collected 11 eggs for my highest # in a single day. 1 WS cockerel and 1 BO cockerel
then I have my 7 assorted chicks from Christmas hatch that I have not figured out genders 100% yet. (a little scared after 75% cockerels on my first hatch hahaha)
