Quail getting into position to break out of the egg
3 empties and 3 early quitters leaves me with 27 live eggs on Day 7. The ones I set from my own hens are going strong. Took a video of the embryos moving inside—looks pretty alien to me.

Alien is good!

Woot!

Guess who thinks dirt is a monster.

Heck no. I'm not trying to fix a broken baby quail leg.

Have you see those wood duck babies that tumble out of trees after hatch? Quail chicks are so light and tiny—I highly doubt their own weight could break a bone, even a freshly-hatched one.

 Those poor babies.

I could watch those kind of videos all day long.
I just might watch a few more now while I'm resting for a few minutes.

Those poor ducks!! OMG!!

The mamas brood up high for safety. They leap the day they hatch. Gotta respect a strategy like that.

Really, though, it doesn't hurt them. Probably not even all that uncomfortable. It's like dropping a squirrel vs dropping an elephant—one scampers off unharmed, the other not so much.
