main problem is the lack of clarification.....does this include indoor and/or outdoor pets??? since they include all birds and small animals of similar size and character.....does that 8 include my buttons, the guinea pigs that DS keeps in his room??? or just 8 outdoors?

I would think it would just be outdoors where they are visible and/or could bug the neighbors. I don’t think indoor pets count. A lot of people keep rabbits for meat so I’m thinking it’s just like farm animals since if you have meat rabbits not pets that’d be included in that. I doubt they will do a home inspection. But you could ask for clarification when they come back. But it seems to me it’s only outdoor animals since the property line stuff wouldn’t apply to indoor pets anyway.

Hmm.. true. Idk. I would assume it would have to be indoors since a shed would probably count as a coop??

And I would assume so? Idk.

But of course if you kept 8 roos they would probably get complaints and change the regulation lol

That’s ridiculous! When the humane society gets involved that’s never good for anyone haha IMO there’s a major difference between animal rights and animal welfare and most of the “animal rights” people are bonkers!!

I just hope you can meet their ridiculous expectations and get some clarification before inspection.

I want to hatch more!
But DW is due to give birth to our DD in just 7 weeks. I think we need to slow down until the Spring... It's difficult enough casting for a new born so I don't think I should be adding any more beings to care for.

I would write a formal protest. I don't think that it's enforceable as written. How were these passed as code/law without someone intelligent reviewing them?

A bunch of those "rules" are probably already covered by state or county code. And they are clearly written by someone who doesn't have an understanding of animal differences - poultry and fowl don't give birth and "a year" is a very long time for most poultry. How does purchasing chicks fit into this equation? Or is that outlawed now because they are purchased and your chickens didn't "give birth" to them?

Isn't there a forum on here regarding code/law? I would post there and see if someone who speaks fluent legalese can help you draft a letter to protest this and maybe get it thrown out.

The second pic you posted contains the words “Regulations specific to chickens:” After those words it seems reasonable to apply all the text in that paragraph to chickens only. So no, I don’t think they’ll have any legs to stand on (unless they change the regulations) in requiring anyone to provide 10 sq ft of run area per quail or rabbit or even per goat. It seems clear to me this paragraph is intended specifically for chickens.

Actually it looks like there was someone on the committee who maybe knew a little bit about chickens and wanted to make sure the chickens weren’t overcrowded and also, maybe wanted to show off just a little bit.

It’s not a really impressive document (which I think you probably noticed). It looks like something written by city councilmen or their staff (if they have staff), just trying to put together something to curb potential abuses and give themselves a bit of a framework for what they should sanction and what they should permit when responding to complaints.

(Edited to add: oops just saw your post. Not councilmen then... unelected bureaucrats then. Ugh X2)

Then they can say, “They’re complying with the regulations, so we can’t do anything.” Or they can say, “Well you see, the regulations say you need 10sq ft of run area for chickens so we’re gonna have to ask you to cut your flock down to a more reasonable number—323 chickens are just too many for your backyard.”

Since with rabbits and quail you can be discreet, keeping a low profile might go a long way toward avoiding trouble. It’s too bad it’s even necessary, but if you don’t want to explain your operation to city hall, it may be easiest not to talk about it with anyone else, or at least not with anyone local.

Alternatively you could (ugh) run for public office. Not my thing, but most places could sure use more real people with real common (or should I say uncommon?) sense.
