Brabanters and Spitzhaubens--The Differences PIC HEAVY!

Pics
I agree that it IS a Brown Leghorn. She is not built like a Welsummer either. Plumage color is off too.

BabyR, you are lucky to find someone who has them...not too many people would sell them because they are so rare. AND yes, they need to be recognized by the APA to accept Spitzhaubens and Brabanters in the Standard. While so many of us have less than ideal birds, and we keep working on them, I would say within five to ten years, we should start seeing more promotions to show and getting the APA to accept them.

Honestly I do not know how to get them accepted. Yahoo and Facebook has the Spitzhauben group, but I have no information about the Brabanters but we do see Brabanter owners in the Spitzhauben group in both sectors.

Acceptance requires a certain number of breeders who have had their birds at least 5 years and are showing them. Standards are then presented to the APA for acceptance. Well, that's the procedure I watched as USAMarans (or was it Marans USA?) got approval for the black coppers. Each color needs their own submisssion. All the Brabanter folks here should join the yahoo group April (H&H Poultry) started as well. We're not a noisy bunch, but it would be good to have everyone gathered in one place when the time comes to communicate something important.
The yahoo group, for some reason, showed up as a UK site....don't let that fool you!

Well some of the breeders that had them for five years are not showing them and not very many.....or have the ability to increase the flock. I wished I could..I live in the city so no go but I sure can holler, scream and rant and get er done with the Spitzhauben and Brabanters to be accepted!

When you say five breeders for five years, how many birds? When shown must they place high in judging (entered as AOV)? Would the breeder need to demonstrate consistency in breed standards over the five years or improvement in meeting standards over that time? I realize that the US does not have standards but I would assume breeders in the U.S. would be guided by English or Swiss Standards until something is adopted here? And what about vibrancy, a strong genetic base and LLV control? Someone is going to tell me to go read the APA site!

What I do know is that the best needs to be shown. I assume (yikes!) that the UK standards would be used, but after your visit to the APA site, you can let us know

These are pictures of my two 4 month old Spitz pullets. They are the only ones that hatched under a Spitz broody this spring. She set well, but did not know what to do with the babies when they started hatching, so she kicked them out of the nest. These two I got into an incubator in time.

The two single pictures are the same bird. The other one was shy, but you can see her behind the EE pullet.

I was going to take some pictures of my 2 month old Spitz chicks, but my battery died. Maybe tomorrow.
