Cackleberry Cottage~~comes to life!

He is definitely not retired. He left the hardware store because the owner refused to give him a raise and he thought he could make more money working for himself. He still has 3 children at home, so I am pretty sure he needs to work for a living. He seems to be struggling financially as well by the things he tells us. The other one is 28 years old and I know he has some issues, but he is a good worker and has been very nice to me. I just don't get the lack of showing up when I am offering them paid work. But I guess it is what it is and I should just accept that.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense...the quitting thing does add some clues.

It's the human condition, old as humans....some folks are good, some are not.

I haven't hired many, but I always start out with asking for a copy of their license, or at least their insurance. That weeds the punks out right at the get-go. Then I present a list/description of what I want done for them to quote off of, discussion and changes may ensue. I sign the quote, they sign the list of items if they haven't been spelled out in quote...that includes lead times and conditions of any delays.

Chats and handshakes don't often stand up, things in writing mostly do as clarity in communication is important.

Re: the written contract for jobs...that's beneficial to the person doing the job as well as the one wanting a job done. My ex used to do house painting and there were times where a homeowner wouldn't want to pay because 'x' didn't get done. All the ex had to do was show the homeowner what was agreed to in writing by both parties. None of that 'he said/she said' stuff to waffle over.

Absolutely! Was going to add that.
Have had contractors hate that(the bad ones), and love it(the good ones).

These guys aren't contractors. Just local guys trying to make a living. My husband knows them and was trying to help them out and get their business up and running. They do very good work, it just seems hard to get them to actually come and do it. No contracts, as we pay by the hour and I tell them day by day what I want done They are quite good at following my directions. If they don't work, they don't get paid.

We got ripped off once before by paying someone up front and then he ran off before the job was done. It wasn't worth taking him to court as he had gone to another state, so the contract we signed with him wasn't much help.

We are having horrific winds today. I feel like Dorothy ever time I go out to check on the girls. They don't like it either and are hiding in and under their new coop!

My guys showed up today at 1:30. They will probably leave in less than an hour. They are putting in windows.

Oh now that is a hard days work. Lol. One if mine stopped by last night and picked up tgecwindow and frame and is,working on it at home. Coming back today to install it. Hooray! Those horrid winds finally stopped so I am hopeful they can get some work done. If course now we have 2 roofs to repair on top of the coop stuff. It never ends.

My guys did not show today due to the winter storm advisory. Nor the guy who is supposed to fill an area near the house where i will be planting fruit trees.
It is quite beautiful today.
