I hate snakes! The chickens will kill and eat the little garden snakes.

I had read that they would! But I freaked and ended up cooping them back up! It was gone when I went back to look THANK GOODNESS. I couldn’t take it and ruined all the fun!

she had a comb/face that turned red so early I came on BYC to see if anyone thought she was an accidental rooster, some did, some didn’t!

I was extremely worried she was a cockerel because I know Brahmas are slow to mature, but even though she’s not laying, she’s not crowing either. Which is good for me. I think.

when I come to do my chicken chores everyday I let the girls out of their run into the yard. Columbia always runs right over to the tall grass lining the property and has caught all sorts of critters to eat. I never thought a Brahma would be a good forager, so she’s breaking the mold in more way than one.

I'm right there playing the hurry up and wait game also ,I hatched my mutts ( was informed they are favaucana) June 3rd can't wait to see some beautiful green eggs in the nesting boxes , my Austra white and Black Australorp have been laying for couple weeks now.

What a surprise. No eggs again. Tomorrow all of the ladies turn 19 weeks. Roosterous attacked me through the fence today, so I really wasn’t impressed with him. Not one bit!
Profile 5/16. Scary Spice
The first two pictures are from about a month ago. In the other pictures you can see the comb/wattle development

Scary Spice is one of my three Black Sex Link pullets. She has the most gold on her by far and is definitely somewhat of a protector of the other pullets.

she’s no-nonsense. If someone is being dramatic she will put them in their place quite quickly. She always gets a prime roosting spot right by one of the coop windows but always lets the other girls snuggle in close.

she’s fiery and fierce. She would make a good momma.

her sisters have those pretty iridescent feathers and she has none of that. She’s very straightforward. What you see is what you get. And What I really want to see are some eggs!!!!

It’s misting outside. Not enough to call it rain but more than just fog. Kind of like the tears that most my eyes when I realize there are no eggs today.

Happy 19th week birthday to my pet chickens. I never wanted pet chickens. But until they start laying- they are just pets and really aren’t snuggly enough for my tastes.

Welsummer #1

I have to be honest, I can’t tell my three Welsummer pullets apart. They look the same to me. I try, I’m sure there are differences in body type and personality but I just can’t get a grasp on it. they run next to each other and I’m all mixed up. One comes up to me a lot more than the other two. Is it Number 1? Maybe.

I took these pictures today so I know most of these are of the same pullet.

Number 1 has a deep squak. She always sounds like she’s complaining. Maybe not complaining. Grumbling? But deep. Again- they all do this. Not sure.

Those last two pictures might both be Number 1 but that last one looks a little different?

The Welsummer pullets were the only breed I ordered as a straight run. I wanted a Wellie Rooster. I didnt get one. I’m hoping they will lay dark speckle eggs.Not sure about that either.

What I do know is they are 13, 14 & 15in the pecking order. Right above Opal. Everyone is mean to them. They are sweet but flighty and enjoying free ranging the most. They love to forage and are the sportiest shaped birds I have. I like them. I just wish I knew who was who!

Spoiler Alert. No eggs today. Ran to the feed store and bought some scratch for the girls. I haven’t had any for about a week and was feeling bad for them even though they are holding out on me!!!!
Profile 7/16. - My sweet, not-at-all snuggly, terrifying looking pullet named Vulture.

She’s one of my Townline Olive Eggers. She has no muff or beard which gives her a sharp, beaky appearance, hence the name Vulture.

She used to be one of my least favorite. She just looked like she was plotting to peck out my eyeballs at any given moment, I mean, look at that face....

Angry, right? But she’s actually kind of timid. She took her time to trust me but now will come up to take some treats from me and doesn’t run away in a plume of feathers and fright. And she’s kind of pretty in her own way. If she’s not looking directly at you, you may not feel any terror at all!!

She has a tiny tiny comb like her sister but it’s pretty red, as is the skin on her cheeks and her ears.

And that is Vulture!
I have to be honest, I’m losing hope for eggs. It’s tiring to anticipate them everyday and not see any progress. Oh well. Until tomorrow......
