Speckled it is hard on the wrists. I broke my left wrist years ago on the joint. It was a nasty break and took months to heal.....anyways since then I have always had problems with it. I am right handed thank goodness but that left wrist bothers when I use it a lot. I can only crochet for a couple hours at a time or quilt. Holding the ruler down bothers me. I do understand about painful wrists. I am having a hard time with the afghan because it's somewhat awkward and a little heavy. It's fun though. That's funny, pw. I find using tiny hooks very difficult due to my carpal tunnel. Even my 4.25 mm seems teensy. I guess it's what you start with. I've never tried crochet thread and I'm not sure I could use it with my issues. Seems like it would tangle badly.
For the tangles there is an answer. Mine is..I bought a music stand. I do no use the book holder part. Instead I use a bent coat hanger and shove it down in side the top. Next I find a fishing swivel. Next you can either bend another piece of coat hanger of buy a cat toy thing. (Ethical Pet Door-Able Bouncing Mouse with Catnip Cat Toy). You can search it on google. Ha ha that is what I am using to hold the thread. The music stand works good because I can fold it up and take it with me not to mention I can have it the height I want it. I do some strange inventions.
