Earthen Acres Homestead: First mixed laying flock

Pics
Today I took a couple old tires I had laying around and added a spa(dust bath) to their gym(sticks)lol. I took some sod I had for the bottom layer, and covered it with a mix of mostly soil and wood ash, with a bit of DE mixed in. Vickie was the first to take a dip.

She couldn't keep the secret for long though, and was shortly joined by her friends, Betty and Jewel.

Creative and clever. It's good to enrich their lives. Great job

Been a lot happening here! I currently have 7 eggs incubating in my new Brinsea Mini advanced ii. This is my first hatch attempt and already, on day 2, i'm a nervous wreck. Sitting on my hands. I painstakingly collected the seven eggs by following my girls around sneakily so I can see who laid what. I wanted to make sure I had seen them bred before I just took an egg. Only 7 spots in the bator so I'm really trying for the best hatch ratio of dual purpose birds I can. Plan on integrating the pullets and freezer for the cockerels. I got the brooder all set up, and have been drawing up plans for a chicken tractor to grow the roos out in.

Also, I ordered Guinea Keets!! French pearls from JM hatchery. I have their brooder all ready to go, they arrive on the 24th! I'm going to build them a night time coop andlet them free range during the day. My poultry operation is growing fast, and I'm so grateful to everyone on here I have interacted with. Pics of all this new awesomeness to come.

Thank you for your interest.

Ughh so ive been waiting like 12 days for my ecoglow brooder plate to come in the mail. Today it finally came(walmart.com via fedex) and was mnissing all four adjustable legs! :( Not the end of the world, I initiated an online return and ordered the same one off amazon, whose shipping times are back to semi-normal. I just wanted to set up my guinea brooder and stop thinking about it until the little keets got here! Oh well. New brooder arrives monday, keets arrive thursday, and I have a back up CHE just in case. Rant Over.

Here's some pics from tuesday, the day I set the eggs. Candled two last night, for scientific reference purposes of course and not impatience lol. The two eggs I looked at seem viable!

Warming up!

This process has really helped me identify which egg comes from which chicken. Took a couple days of stalking, but I can now ID all of their eggs.

The journey begins!
