Final picture of the night. Something for everyone to dream about. A redhead fluffy butt, very clean looking ( though she was playing in mud all day!) IMG_3122.jpeg

Counting chickens…

9…..
Supposed to be 10, and Marty makes 11 (she roosts in her nest box). Who is missing? Oh well of course who else? Buttercup.

I call over the camera to see if she is hidden in the pileup at the one end. Nope no one moves, I guess the disembodied voice is ignored now.

Nothing for it, I have to go to the barn. 23:20hrs, and cold 7C, brrrr! I need to make sure I actually did count her earlier.

It’s actually a lovely night for winter, crystal clear and a good stiff breeze, stars twinkling, but no northern lights.

Onward to the barn, I creep in trying not to disturb the horses (I snort with laughter at that), oh they know I am there. Even with all the lights out they know my walk, but they also know I am not there to feed them so no warm welcoming nicker from Truly, she always talks to me. Unless it middle of the night!

Ok now we’re is Buttercup? I put on my toques headlamp (love that toque!), and look on the hen house, I don’t see her anywhere - darn it! I check nest boxes good grief.

Then a movement, oh! There she is up in the window well, darn chicken! Ok quick count they are all there, good night chickies see you in the morning, good night geegees behave.

And that is that, I don’t mind going to the barn at 11:30 at night when it’s warm, it not when it’s cold! Brrrr!

And I dragged Buttercup down from the window.

Chiiiiiickens! So stressful 🤨
Steven King has nothing over you Kelly. You scared the 💩 out of me. I don’t need the Buttercup type of stress she causes.
(I’ll go scream into my pillow now) :barnie

Hey! Don’t go giving my imagination any ideas, it’s already fruitful enough! It’s a dark walk to that barn, 400’ with lots of trees 😁😳

This morning everyone was accounted for, including mums, babies and tweens.

I just checked the camera that looks to the main roost to make sure Bernie and Babs were roosting OK.

What I saw instead took me by surprise.

Basically the littles have all lined up on a roost opposite the bigs. I wonder if they will stay there all night. Probably not - but it is cute!
Soooo cute!

Uh-oh. It's gray out today. I was thinking rainy/foggy day. Nope, it's smoke. I think the jet stream shifted and we're getting it down out of Alberta....View attachment 3508390Hotspots: active fires...

Yes air quality is bad out there, the wind shifted yesterday and is driving that smoke down your way, hopefully it won’t be too bad for you.

Which one is that lovely boy? So pretty 🥰

I giggled at this comment because I was quite surprised as well, I never looked up what the chicks were going to look like, so like you I 100% expected dark colored chicks. Having now googled it, this is normal baby floof for this color variety. So, yes they will indeed get quite a bit darker. When Brownie will let me get close to them, I see dark mahogany and white speckles on their wings.
The breeding stock these babies come from:

So they are like the opposite of the ugly ducking?
