I think she will be ‘ok’ but I am now seriously thinking of having her euthanized, I have been leaving the horses out overnight due to her falling over in her stall from her sleep issues. She doesn’t want to lay down to sleep as she can’t get back up easily, so she falls asleep standing up and falls over.

Last night I just didn’t realize it would be so miserable weather wise. I am guessing she fell over and then couldn’t get up due to the slippery mud.

My fear is that she falls and breaks something and I don’t get to her till morning. I am going to have to talk with my veterinarian about this.

Ok well I better get cracking here and let the horses out, since we are under severe thunderstorm warnings I will have to bring them in later incase of lightning and possible tornadoes. I want Truly to get outside walking to see how she is. I gave her pain meds.

Miserable Miserable Miserable

Overnight the weather change yet again dramatically; I knew it was calling for rain but I didn’t know it would be like a Witches of November type storm, with cold temps, high winds and torrents of rain.

I had such a miserable night with my RLS waking every hour.

I was going to check cameras outside but I didn’t.

I awoke at 04:45 and disabled the 5am alarm and the 5:30am alarm, I fell back asleep till 6am. Then got up to go to the barn.

That is when my heart sank. There was Truly down on the ground in the mud, she couldn’t get up, I grabbed her halter and a leadshank to use for stability and tried to get her up. It was a struggle but I was able to get her up on three legs. It was so slippery she wasn’t able to get up on her own.

Heaven knows how long she was down on the ground, and likely she fell over and couldn’t get up again. It was just my luck that it was miserable weather, and I didn’t check my cameras and I slept in. Poor Truly I failed her by not keeping a better eye on her.

Anyways I put everyone in the barn wrapped her in a blanket, shut her stall window, to keep drafts away, and gave her some pain meds, and a hot morning mash.

And now the sun is coming out and it’s supposed to be HOT & HUMID today with severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.

This up and down with the weather is crazy, I don’t know if I should keep horses in at night; it put the AC on on the house… the chooks are hiding out in the barn a lot - it’s either stupid hot and humid, or pelting down rain.

The farmers or horse owners that I know of around here use turmeric in their horse feeds. I hope your vet approves of this as well as the prescription medication

I've heard that turmeric is good for joint issues. I use glucosamine chondroitin for my personal joint pain.

Clever man. I really must get some glucosamine and chondroitin myself. It's the darn fillers in the supplements put me off. But turmeric and ginger along with cayenne pepper has been a life saver for me

My friends daughter has been in bed for two days with pain. My friend said she believes that her addiction too chocolate and processed foods has caused this

So scary. I hope she is OK.

My big worry was not being able to get her up it was so slippery - as it was she was just floundering about trying to get her legs under her, sliding around - I was supplying a steady 'pull' on her head which is a risky thing if she pitched forward she could trample me or fall on me - and I am not moving the best anymore, apparently I am not 19 anymore! (mind says I am - body laughs and laughs and laughs..).

Anyways, she finally got upright - I worried she would just flip over when she was floundering around - it's a scary situation. She couldn't put weight on her left hind leg as she was laying on it for who knows how long - and that is another worry - if the nerve gets compressed from laying on too long then the nerve can die and that is an instant death knell for a horse (or cow). I was a bit freaked out, and we stood there in the pelting down rain for about 10 minutes, I just held her head steady with my arm wrapped around her head while she got a bit more stable, she was freezing cold, shivering so hard. She is not good in the cold and wet as it is, but laying in the muddy water (and we are just flooded here) is enough to give one hypothermia. Poor Truly

Then I noted that the other two 'b!#$%s' had run to the back door and pushed the door open and went into the barn. I didn't want Truly to get even more freaked out being left all alone so I asked her to 'walk on' and she was able to walk forward, I watched her hind leg and she was putting weight on it thankfully - but limping, very stiff.

I got her in the barn, wrapped a polar fleece blanket around her, shutting the stall window, I gave her some hay to see if she would eat - which she did so I let her eat some hay and then after about 15 min, gave her some Phenalbutizone (Bute), a hot mash left them inside after breakfast as it is just miserable here, cold and drizzly - just like early November. We were under a severe thunderstorm warning but that has ended thankfully, I am guessing the 'hot humid' weather they were predicting is not going to happen.

So I guess I will go back to bringing them in at night, I have a tough decision to make with Truly, if I am going to away working for extended periods of time I don't want others to have to deal with these situations and heaven forbid if Truly fell and broke a leg in the stall. I have my cameras but sometimes when I wake during the night I feel so miserable (I know how Truly feels as I also don't sleep well) I just don't want to open the phone to check the cameras. Like last night and this morning. And of course where I board the horses the wife wont let me put cameras in the stalls. So I need to decide on Truly's fate. It would be easier if I could get a job working remotely from home - which I am actively looking for, but which are extremely slim pickings for!

Need to win that lottery so I can stay home, take care of Truly and my Mum!

Meanwhile the chooks were having a blast running around out back in the mud and muck - no takers on Wild Water though haha - ewwww!

She’s back up on all 4s - she is fine as long as she doesn’t have to lay down. Or if she does she has some good traction to dig in her hooves to get back up (same if she falls).

But it was the mud causing issues.

Update on Pip...

I thought I did see blood in some poop in the the run. But she's running around, MUCH more active than I saw on Tuesday. I'm treating everyone with Corid, and today is day 3. I planned to go 5 days, as I'd read 5 days is how long to treat.

Is that the conventional wisdom, or in my haste to find out how much Corid to put in a gallon, did I miss something? I'm using 1.5 teaspoons/gallon, as I read in more than one place. Anyone, please weigh in on this...

Pip was up on my lap yesterday, when I sat in the the run. Joined by Sunny, then Squeak, then Button. Robin will sit on the log nearby, but is not a lap chicken. At one point, all of them were preening at the same time. I couldn't get a picture, as Squeak was sitting on my arm and it would have been a major disruption for me to move.

Awww they are so darling when they do that - and leave little presents in your chair
