Medicated feed has Amprol in it which is a thiamine inhibitor, coccidia require thiamine to survive, so the Amprol blocks thiamine uptake and prevents coccidia from propagation.

There is no required egg withdrawl period in the US but here in Canada there is a 14 day withdrawl period. Last year I fed medicated chick starter to my grups and ate the eggs and I was fine

This year because I sell eggs - and I am hard pressed to find an All Flock feed I am stuck feeding an mix of my layer and purina start and grow (terrible stuff is nothing but dust!) as a wet mash - I need to find a good grower but it’s really difficult - impossible really. And forget about an all flock.

I'll check it tomorrow. I will say I'm pretty unhappy with how fine the crumble of this is. But it also was relatively cheap. I can always but something different.

Medicated feed isn’t an antibiotic, it’s something to prevent coccidiosis.

You can eat the eggs from a grup that has been fed this feed, there is no holding eggs back.

I found that it seemed to be the behaviour - they were not acting ‘normal’ and that set the others on them.

The broodies would puff up and act all aggressive and the others would react and before one knows it a brawl is happening!

I noted that my hand reared chicks were integrated faster and with less drama than the mama hen babies - those mamas were constantly starting fights with anyone who came close, and the higher ranked birds do not back down!

As I have stated before, Fluffy and Curly were such terrors always fighting and getting the snot beat out of them, I will NEVER let them raise chicks again. In fact I will hand raise any further chicks I get from now on. Having a
Broody raise chicks is too much drama - but letting 10 day old chicks run with the gang is calm and stress free, the adults don’t bother with them, and the chicks quickly learn to follow the grups.

I figured Sophia would be different being one of the Big Three, but she also got the snot beat out of her by her two sisters, and caused so much drama with her chicks. Thankfully now she has settled down and gets along with the others again.

Chickens! Who knew they could be so stressful!

What if you made a broody house? That way, you wouldn't have to feed the whole flock chick starter when the chicks were growing up. You wouldn't have to deal with the drama. When the chicks are old enough to be sexed, pop the pullets in and put the cocks in a cock tractor. That's how I'll do mine. Tomatilla is not in the big coop.

I've never seen any worms in any of my chooks poop. I also give them zucchini and squash quite often which are natural deworkers, right? I will try to find some working meds if I can.
My chooks lay golden eggs. Gosh they are so eggspensive!!

Good morning

It's looking like a storm may be brewing up here we were forecast lightening at 10am.

I've cleaned up the run fed the girls ans let them out. Hopefully they'll have an hour or two before the rain.
