I was freaked out watching Marty launch herself into the dark abyss one night last winter, I saw her do this on the barn cam, from quite a height too.I will admit I didn’t think of that, mainly because I have never seen either of the boys be aggressive with mating or otherwise tbh but it sure doesn’t mean they are perfect gentleman all the time! Maybe they were putting him in his place.
Thank you
They are pretty much on one level but the ladder going up to the roosts can be used as a roost, though that was not my intent.
I have been wanting to redo them as the way we laid them out is terribly inconvenient to clean and now that I have large fowl birds Id rather like them to be a bit lower to the ground.
Maybe this is my sign to get a move on and change it up.
When I got home in March I ripped out everything and made the one level roosts about 30” high - I still consider this too high for the silkies, and the older ladies use the steps to get up and down. I am going to redo the steps right now they are two high, I want to make them 3 steps up.
In the Hen House ‘B’ I am will make the roost ledge 24”. That is what I have it at in the Summer House and I use a step stool for my niece’s old girls to get up and down with. That is a good height also for me to clean daily, I am short so don’t want to be reaching up, or bending down too much with my hips and sacrum.
My school chicks want to roost high up but I want to stop that monkey business, soon they will be older and I don’t want them to hurt themselves. Silly kids!
I want to start n the HH ‘B’ this weekend - I just spent this week painting kitchen cabinets, I hate painting! But they look great, now on to the new digs for my chicks
