Petunia is still unwell - I can feel a mass that feels like an egg in her abdomen, but cannot feel anything if I do an internal exam.

I gave her and Red an egg to eat, but she didn’t want to eat anything else.

I gave her another 1/4 calcium tablet, 1/2 an aspirin and some Tylenol for pain. Last I left her she was in a nest box for the night.

Any further suggestions would be appreciated 😟
What symptoms does she have? Straining?

Cabbage Dominance

Figuring out a pecking order can be difficult. It takes a lot of observation. I have an example for everyone.

Today I put out a cabbage as part of my "Bribe My Way Out of the Doghouse" strategy. I then sat back and watched on the camera as they ate some.

From this video you should be able to place everyone but Hattie into a relative pecking order. Watch and see if you can find the clues as to who ranks where.

Just watched this again. Yep, she's a little ankle-biter! Also fluff-pecker there in the beginning.

Phyllis & Doghouse - I once was acquainted with a poorly-trained rescue that was mostly an Australian Cattle Dog. Short-legged interesting looking dog. An okay dog, until among groups of people. She would stealthily sneak around and between us, and then suddenly try to herd. You had to watch your ankles around that one, she could draw blood! She had a name but we called her Ankle-Biter. Her owners finally took the hint and left her at home when visiting.

Tax: Hazel, examining the hemp bits in the pulled-out poop tray (Tedi just jumped onto it). Her breast feathers are gorgeous!

Thirsty Thursday:

Dottie and Whiskey hitting the now vitamin enriched water!

Oh Albert. She is ravenously eating anything I bring out from the house, which today was the morning mash, scrambled egg, kale, bread, shredded carrot, and blueberries, split into two meals (hah, the other girls are so jealous). But between those meals she is not eating. It’s as though her sense of taste changed and pellets are now off the menu.

I’m happy to feed her whole foods for however long she needs, but since I’m just able to get up there twice a day she’s going to keep getting skinnier.

Who has experience force feeding soft pellet mash with a syringe? Is this a worthwhile avenue to take, to ensure she’s getting some complete nutrition?

How is Bridgie doing?:fl
Thanks for asking. She seems less tender, but her foot doesn’t really work at all. I’m wondering if she tore a ligament or something. When I spend time with them and let them range, I try the little boot on her for a while. I’m still not ready to leave her in it all day long when I’m not there. It does seem to help, but it’s rigid and makes it hard for her to lay down and stuff and I don’t know if she’d be able to hop up to the roost. She seems to be coping pretty well all things considered.

Petunia

I have given her a warm bath, and wrapped her up in a towel for a bit, she became restless so I let her down - she scarfed back a bunch of meal worms and is now eating some of the textured layer they all like.

That is an improvement as earlier she wouldn’t eat anything other than the egg I gave her and Red and some meal worms. She is perkier, but you know chickens that could be just their hiding illnesses

Oh and she just pooped a liquid-y poop, maybe she isn’t egg bound, maybe it’s something else,

I didn’t think they could poop if egg bound..?

Anyways I dried her off with the blow drier (she is not a fan of), and popped a wee bit of mineral oil in her cloacae in case she needs some lubricant.

I popped her back in the Hen House up on the ledge where she was earlier. Now I will give the horses some hay - they are awake now that I am out here. It’s something different and they don’t like that.

Ok all have a good night.
