Dakota is inside with us. I was hoping that would prompt him to eat something. No success
Just quiet and warm for now, he can eat tomorrow. Some warm sugar water offered would be ok, but don’t force the issue.

Ok I’ll pop in later on when I am up tonight.

It’s not a good day for my friend or me. We both are at a loss as to what to do next. I called the veterinary office. But they couldn’t help us right now.
Had I gone to Colorado, Jaffar would probably be dead by now, and not comforted the way he is now.
But who comforts me ? :hit
This is heartbreaking and I have no words, Jaffar's in shock it sounds like. Nutridrench and fluids, dripped into his beak a little if he won't take it? He needs it. The warmth and snuggle you're giving him is good and comforting. I hope to read ahead and find he's still alive 😭 And hugs for you :hugs :hugs :hugs

I went out to take pictures of beaks and toenails so you guys could advise me on whether they needed filing and immediately noticed Sylvie.
She seems to have lost a toenail and the very end of her toe looks like it might be necrotic!

How would something like that happen?
I feel like a terrible chicken tender for not noticing.

It doesn’t seem to bother her and she is digging with both feet so I don’t believe it is infected or painful.

But WTH? I know Tassels tries to eat my fingers, but surely she wouldn’t actually swallow Sylvie’s toe?!

WDYT. Anything to worry about? Left foot, middle toe.

Her feet look dirty but at least from these pics that toe doesn't look like pictures I've seen of necrotic tissue, such as from frostbite, which would be blacker. Is there any swelling, it looks fairly normal-sized, doesn't it? Are you able to clean gently and get a better look at the end? I could be totally off-base but it doesn't look freshly wounded, and I think I might see a very worn-down nail there, at least the nail toe "bump", the under-pad, looks to be there. Better pic needed.

It deleted half of the story… Here, I’m pretty sure that the last picture repeats a lot of stuff. View attachment 3771162View attachment 3771163View attachment 3771164View attachment 3771165
You and your mother have seen a tragedy. You did the right thing, waiting for your mom to tell you what to do. It's a lot to process and get through, and when it's "over" it may not really be "over". Try to be kind to yourself and everyone around you....including your parents who are likely freaking out even if they don't show it. Sometimes what happens is tempers can get short from the stress, and totally unrelated things can get weird. It can be hard to focus on the stuff in your regular life. Your chickens and others in your care, and your best friends are a good place to retreat to for awhile. Here's some hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs

I promise to never leave him. I will feed him from my hand and find him drink while he can’t see it. I am so sorry this happened, but just like any predator, can happen to anyone at any moment. This next door predator has done enough for me to justify its termination
I kept Anna alive when both her eyes were swollen and she was closing them too, I was hand-feeding her and tapping the feed cup and water cup so she could find it while holding them in front of her, she could still hear. Jaffar needs to survive the shock, he's withdrawing to recover, so I agree with @Ponypoor to keep him undisturbed and warm, with his closest hen friend and human friend for company.

No, no, I understand. It’s kinda comforting to know that you (and I’m sure many others in here) know how awful it is.
Yes. I was about your age when a fellow waiting for a ride to work in a rural intersection got hit by a motorcycle going too fast around a corner. We kids didn't see it, we heard it. His leg(s) were broken but he survived. The motorcyclist got hurt but also lived. I'll never forget it.

I’m so hurt and scared for my roo
:hugs :hugs :hugs

He can even sleep in my bed tonight if he wants to. I just wish he would open up the eye, so that I don’t worry about it so much.
Keeping his eye closed may be the best thing for whatever happened to it right now, a natural bandage.
