I initially read this as “Their middle kid is a chicken” until I saw that the picture was in the middle of the sentence. :D I toyed with the idea of a chicken swing, not sure if my girls would use it.

Mine have never used the swing. I have had it in the big run since I built it. They say get them on the swing when they are small but I have run 2 sets of littles through and have had no success at the swing. It is wonderful to see others use it.

I brooded my half of the flock in a big cardboard box that had only enough room to hang the bottom part of the swing two inches off the floor, and while the chicks hopped on and off it, now they don’t seem to recognize it at all and they don’t attempt to use it. I’m sure my young friend will keep trying to put them up there to see if it “takes.” She definitely had one swinging for about a minute. I haven’t figured out how to post that video yet. :D

 I totally goofed on my photo placement and I also read it like that when I published it! Back to the remedial posting school for me....

Maleficent's Bullying

I keep going on about how Mal is picking on Aurora right now. I managed to snag a little video on Saturday. In this first one Mal will go after Aurora seemingly, just because.

The second video occurs shortly after the first. You can see how Hattie is blocking Mal's access to Aurora. Aurora is using Hattie to try and put some distance between her and Mal. Once Aurora gets out, Mal chases her to the pool heater. Hattie is completely disinterested in the whole affair.

This goes on all day. Today we even had a flying chest bump (I would love to get a video of that!). I wonder when the order will settle down again?

Lucy's the one that does most of the chasing, but she's the alpha hen. And she does a lot less of it these days, except when Charlie's broody, then both Isas go for her.

Nice and Sunny and still Everyone is Huddled Up

We had a masive rainstorm Saturday night that dropped inches of rain. It started during the day on Sat and realy curtailed the girls free ranging. Once the rain was through this morning the sun came out and I thought the girls would be in for a fun day of free ranging. Sunny, 75 degrees (24 C) and lots of wet leaves to dig through. Unfortunately, this how they spent their day, huddled under the trumpet vine. Aurora spent hours just sitting.

Why you might ask? The howling wind. It was actually blowing them around everytime they ventured out of this area of the yard. I shot a short video of bedtime. Aurora certainly and even Mal did not really want to go to bed but it was too difficult to do anything else. Listen to the wind and watch Aurora's sad attempt to stay out. Everyone wound up on the roost about 30 min early tonight. :(

My pecking order was very stabile and there was very little of this until Mal went broody. Ever since it is almost constant. I hope it settles down soon.
