Some boys never learn...

Ned greeted me outside this morning when I let the dogs out. He doesn't go far at all and I have to admit he does a great job of eating all the bugs. I had just missed a shot of him snacking on a cricket.

His accomplice is also out...

This is Vicki. Her full name is Vicki with the hicki. When she was a pullet she had a single black tipped feather on her neck. She was the only one I could tell apart.

Little did I know she'd become a Cougar and lead Ned astray!!:lau

She's going through her first big molt, so I'm ok with her getting some extra bugs for added protein. She also sticks close to the coop and the rest of the flock that listens! While I don't like to have my flock loose when I'm not home, these 2 stick together and never leave the yard. I also have several generations of crows living in my pine trees surrounding my property so I don't often get hawks. Rich and I will tighten up the fencing this weekend and put an end to their adventures.
A group of crows have taken up residence on the South ridge here. I was watching them harass a peregrine falcon this morning. The falcon isn't likely to bother the adult chickens but they will go for a chick given the chance.

My bad...I need to make a correction...I was naming the wrong critter...the damage I saw actually came from Yellow-Bellied Marmots...but groundhogs could possibly cause the same type of damage! They're kind of cute...but are actually a terrible pest on a homestead!

I Lost One!

I could not find Phyllis tonight. The first night all week that I did not watch them roost. So of course, I check coop cam and there is no sign of Phyllis anywhere. Now she could be right against the door but Hattie would be awful close and she does not like Phyllis that close to her.

So out i go, I open the door to the coop, no sign of Phyllis. My heart drops. Where is she?

She is not in the run, not in the magnolia tree, not under the coop.

I open the coop again.

I can't tell you why.

Maybe I was thinking she was in a nesting box.

I still can't see her. Then I start counting and I notice 2 black trails on the high roost. This is what i saw.

My terror is Phyllis' triumph. Every night Phyllis is the first in the coop and goes to the high roost. Tonight Lilly did not kick her off like she usually does.

Here is Phyllis enjoying the high roost before Lilly comes in to evict her.
