Good grief Poppet your timing it terrible.

A light switch has been flipped in her tiny little silkie brain in a matter of hours. She went from happy little stuffing her face hen to a shrieking and biting demon from the pits of the underworld over her egg. I braved the rabid beast to check and yup, she is starting to pluck those breast feathers as well. Now what. Branch has been gone 10 days. She will not be ready for a few more days. With Randy around I also cannot trust that any of her eggs are still sired by Branch. If she had done this a week ago I would have saved 3 or 4 of her eggs to stuff under her.
Have you seen him at her? It may be worth the risk.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I'm honestly trying to not cry while fiddling with this dang temperature knob. On the plus side...there are 8 still happily tucked under my silkie broodies. And I'll make a little mark where the knob is supposed to stay in case it gets bumped again. I temped all the eggs, they're sitting between 106F and 111F. :(

If they do die I'll have to figure out a way to tell kiddo so she doesn't do it again but she isn't devastated. I know I would have been even as a 3 year old if I accidentally killed eggs...
So sad. Hard lessons sometimes. I would consider what exactly I told them very carefully evaluating what a 3 year old can actually process.

:hugs :hugs :hugs

Blue bared one is standing like a pullet in the pic and pullets tend to be more stand offish than cockerels do.
Interesting! I've only bought pullets before and when I was a kid it was "force snuggles while checking each baby for pasty butt" with our meat birds haha.

I told her that because she wiggled the knob and I didn't realize it quickly enough to fix it, so these eggs might not hatch into babies. But the broody hens outside still have their eggs, and we still have Peepy and Cheepy. She already knows that not all eggs grow up since our girls have been laying, so I think she accepted that.

Finally planting the seeds hubby got me for Mother's day haha.

Truth be told, I wore my best dress shirt to church, not knowing that one of the chooks crapped down the back of it. I was only inside the coop for 3 minutes and then… yuck 🤮
I hate laughing at this but I can't help myself. :lau :gig :lau :gig :lau

What a great age. Once a hen reaches 6 yrs we breathe easier that she will live long and healthy for several more years.

This little girl lived over 11 yrs before her wee heart stopped. She is 6 yrs in this pc.

What a blessing. How lucky you were.

I went to town this morning and took a picture of the site where Sir Jaffar my rooster buddy was laid to rest. Only his body is under the ground, I’m sure he is somewhere else laughing his Cochin head off.
I recently planted that redwood tree and then planted him there. View attachment 3892732
