Some good news - the newbies are finally allowed to come out of coop and were out with the bigs today. They are getting so big. I am looking forward to getting some good photos soon.

Some bad news - Cinnamon passed last night. I found her curled up by the chicks feeder this morning on the ground. Nothing at all appeared to be wrong with her nor had I seen any indication of a problem in the last few days. She was only 2.
She was a beautiful Wellsummer and very sweet. Fly high sweet girl.

She was absolutely gorgeous. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I wish we could actually talk to our chickens - so they could tell us if something was wrong, if they hurt, etc. All we can do is watch and hope they aren't hiding too much...and show them love and respect while they are with us.

Yes the gender dna testing is wonderful.

Last time I used the egg membrane for ID. Since I only had the two chicks it was easy to know which one was which.

The first time I use blood, I clipped a toenail short and used a few drops of blood on a special card they sent me.

I will just wait with these two I have here now. What will be will be.

I am so very sorry for your loss. That's very young. So many things can go wrong without us ever knowing. :hugs :hugs :hugs

This is where I am extremely thankful for my grandparents and parents. My family has always hunted and fished. Growing up, especially before the age of about 10 one set of my grandparents always raised chickens and pigs for meat along with a garden. When it came time to butcher or field dress and clean whatever was hunted it was not hid from me. I knew from day 1 that the pigs were to be eaten that fall. I was also made aware of that certain flocks of chickens were to be eaten, do not name them. If I did name them, and well I did, they were still to be eaten. When it came time to butcher, I was right there in the way really when little. As I got older I was encouraged to help so I would know how it is done. If it came down to it, and the way this country is going it very well could. I know how to raise a garden. I know how to preserve and can fruits and vegetables. I could also raise my own meat and I love hunting.

Now that being said. I had 2 chickens from the time I was about 3 that were mine and mine alone and were "safe". One of my uncles was a jerk when I was about 9 I think and when he was told to go get a hen for chicken and dumplings he got my pet hen because she was the easiest to catch. That one did traumatize me as while eating chicken and dumplings that night I am looking over the flock and while seeing my rooster my hen was missing. To this day I do not like chicken and dumplings.
What a cruel and horrible man. I'm so very sorry that happened to you. :hugs :hugs:hugs
