I understand Mrs By Bob's reaction. Most of our pets or animals will get sick and die before us, but with chickens it seems to happen so often. I know we should focus on the wonderful time we shared with them, and i'm sure she will in time, but it can be overwhelming when you loose your heart chicken or/and too many in a row. I also think sometimes I'm too emotional for chicken keeping ! Give her some extra hugs from us all. And hug for you too.

This morning I was thinking about the things that I do for confort when I feel sad ...and watching my cats sleep is one of them. They just seem so perfectly relaxed, like nothing in the world matters. It's very soothing. Almost meditative !

What do you folks do for confort that's not related to chickens ?
I bake simple cakes, read silly fantasy novels, and most efficiently but not as easily possible for all, run in the mountains.
Yes a lovely walk in the woods, nature is very soothing. Even when it’s brutally cold there is a soothing nature to it.

Yup! He's still doing okay. No nose bleeds (that I've noticed) in a few days now! Though he was coughing the other night... I don't like that, but I haven't heard that since.

I think wetting and mashing his food is helping. Less pain on his teeth and easier to digest. He has more energy and spunk.

I know I still won't have as long with him as I'd like, but I'm glad he's doing better. Makes me feel better, for sure!
:hugs :love
All we can do is try to keep them comfortable and happy for as long as possible and you are doing an excellent job.

As for his teeth, it's no a cure but can help ease bacteria and pain if it gum disease, is coconut oil. Good for tummies to for humans cat and dogs. My cat loves it.

Your kitties are so cute! I NEED to put my face in their fur, itchiness be darned

I love to cuddle with my cat (when he's willing, he can be a huge cuddlebug when he wants to be, and he purrs like a motorboat)

The Lord of the Rings trilogy has been a comfort to me since I was small. Of course, I can't watch the theatrical versions— only the extended editions 🤣

My weighted blanket is perfect for comfort. The pressure is niiiiice

Talking to my bf... And him reading Discworld to me. We're almost all the way through the series! Right now we're on I Shall Wear Midnight. I love Discworld so much, Terry Pratchett's world and writing are a comfort because it's a fun escape from the Roundworld sometimes, when I need it!

Being outside in nature... And, have any of you ever heard of grounding/earthing/rooting? It's the practice of taking some time out of your day to stand with your bare feet on the earth. It can do wonders for not only emotional health, but physical health too! (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4378297/)

Thank you for the tip! I'll see if we can get some soon!

ETA do you mix it in with their food?

I don’t have feed outside normally when they are outside foraging. I keep it inside the barn. This way squirrels and birds don’t get into it. I also put my feed away at night to limit access with rats and mice. I also keep water sources locked away from them.

So many things to do to keep vermin away. It’s hard work.
I agree ~ although it's not hard work for us necessarily but it IS constant work & why we made the decision not to get chickens (or pets) of any kind till we retired to keep up w/daily monitoring, taking feeders in/out every day, patrolling/setting vermin traps, egg collecting, broody or health monitoring, hawk alerts, etc etc. & we only have 6 birds to monitor! It's even more time consuming for those who have more poultry. I'm afraid to find out how our BYC friends w/ducks/geese/quails/turkeys are doing so far?!

CAT-urday we have no cats but this guy was too cute to pass up for a smile!

Reminds me of when I was younger and would go barefoot everywhere, even muck stalls 😊

Of course now with the chooks, I don’t go bare foot anywhere in the barn or outside haha!

I'm worried about my chooks now. The sparrows invade their feeder whenever they can. We got some bird netting in today to bird proof the coop but those sparrows are very crafty with their ways of getting in.
Treadle feeder solves a lot of that kind of problem, including mice / rats.
