A Valentine's Night Surprise.
I was standing in the kitchen. The house is silent.
I hear something hitting the cabinets. What could it be? A ghost? A animal?
It was none of those.
My stomach tells me what happened.
It was a earthquake.
My chooks were terrified. CC's, not so much. I had to go pick them up, cuddle them, and pop them in their coop.

If I was in California I wouldn't care. Earthquakes are standard there. But El Paso? No. We shouldn't get any. It's terrifying to think that the mointain fault line could be waking up.

That must be something. Supposedly I have been in an earthquake but I have never felt it. I can't imagine what that is like.

Thursday night the roosters were all growling like crazy - it had all the flock on high alert (except a few of the older ones like Blanche and Sophia), it even had me all freaked out. Still don’t know what they were going on about.

Well that would be worrisome. I hope it's really nothing and they were just spooked by something inconsequential.

I looked everywhere and couldn't see anything! I wonder if it was a rat that ran out, say me and the chooks and ran for cover. Though I have not seen any rats on the cameras at night this winter, I wonder if the chooks have taken care of them!

The 4.3 one here had the whole house rattling, my dad said it was a train hahaha. When the News came on I was vindicated - it was a quake.

I have been in the sub level of a 4 story building waiting for an elevator and been overcome with being dizzy, that was a 3 magnitude in Toronto, also been on the 13th floor in downtown toronto and watched the building sway from a 4 mag quake, that made me a bit dizzy also.

They have a 6 mag north of Ottawa and that made the whole house and the walls shake!

People don't realize that Ontario is quake prone - it's as a result of the ice sheets that used to cover here 10,000 yrs ago, the weight suppressed the land which is now popping back up causing quakes.

Rabbit?! Oooo killer bunny - could be! More likely a rat. Speaking of bunnies - they have now taken to bopping along the paths here since there is so much snow! And they are not starting in on the bark of my trees - need to get something wrapped around them to keep the rabbits from killing my trees.

I've found around here, it's usually something large enough to be a threat but small enough to be only a maybe threat....like the neighbor's cat wanting to hunt mice around the coop. The "threat" is something they want to leave, but isn't quite intimidated by the roosters. (So not a predator like a fox or lynx that would carry them off). It's more like a threat to babies.

Alternatively, it's something they've sensed more than seen so they aren't even sure what is there. The whole flock is on alert until they decide it either isn't a threat or can be categorized into type of threat so they know how to respond.

@Ponypoor give your boys some extra goodies (they'll share with the ladies and look better with them). They earned the treats.

It had me freaked out I tell you - I have never heard all the Roos doing this at once - and really loud and threatening.

They watched me while I looked everywhere and moved things, look outside. Once they saw me checking everything else they watched closely. Then once I finished and couldn't see anything I told them 'I don't know what it is and can't see anything so go back to your scratch grain'.

hahaha which they did! Smart chooks. Ya when it's dark out there and I am alone out there it can be spooky. I generally take my cues from the horses, and now I have the chooks them also. They know before me if someone is coming.
