Caught a short-tailed shrew in a live trap last night in the run. Gave it to the girls this morning. I would have felt bad for the little thing if Esme didn't make such quick work of it... It's so cool watching them be dinosaurs One quick smack on the ground and it was gone. I want them to go after the little critters that get in their run so that's why I encouraged them by giving them the shrew.

Plus, the little thing bit me! Don't mind that I'm technically giving the finger. I was just trying to get a clear shot of the bite

Did you know short-tailed shrews are venomous? It felt like a bee sting when it bit me (and held on and hung from my finger by its teeth for about 5 seconds). It was cute though. I love little critters.

After thoroughly breaking all of its bones, Esme managed to swallow the shrew whole!

Make sure you keep it clean and dry, is your tetnus up to date? Not worried about rabies but tetnus is very important. Yep I knew they were venomous.

Last summer I watched Ruth kill and scarf back a frog! And am sure they are hunting mice in the barn. I hardly see any mice around.

Tetanus vacc is every 10-15 years or so, right? My last was 5-6 years ago. It hardly broke the skin though, so I'm not really worried. There's no pain or anything and it didn't bleed. It was so funny just seeing it hang off my finger

My hen CeeCee isn’t feeling well today. She’s not her normal chipper self. She didn’t eat much yesterday but I am watching her closely.

Kelly, you know how much I worry about my feathered friends. My own health has been compromised with worry. I’m just hoping that she’s okay.

Yesterday was my first day off this month. Really glad that I won't be working such a stretch again soon. Eighteen days with only 1 day off is too many!
Last week Cassia decided to try out crowing, I told her that while she had a rather good and lovely crow she was a hen and it was better if she focused on laying eggs instead.

Now for my sad news. Ruca passed away in the dark hours between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. We had 14 years together, she was around 18. Rest in peace beautiful dinosaur. 2007-4/3/2025
