I've been thinking - I think part of our problem in raising chickens in our backyards is that almost all of us have zero experience with chickens from growing up. I've had dogs my whole life and have very few problems with them. My husband's only experience is chasing his grandmother's unnamed hens on her farm and watching her kill them and prepare them for dinner. These are not helpful experiences for me.

We've had backyard chickens 14+ yrs & still we get a totally new challenge thrown at us every once in a while.

I am quick to give pain meds if I think they are in pain. I want them to keep eating and drinking and pooping, and if they are in pain they are not as keen to eat.

Is pain the only reason they stop eating/drinking? The only 2 birds we had that stopped nourishment were our two Mareck's cases, which were not going to survive anyway. Never has our vet prescribed or suggested pain meds or aspirin ~ metcam or electrolytes is as close as he ever got to suggesting anything.

All other birds we had that died ~ ate/drank up to their last hour. Even Mini who had ovarian cancer was running foraging around the yard like normal till I saw the stuck egg on her vent & rushed her to the vet where he tried to remove the egg that adjoined the bleeding ovary/tumor. She was bleeding like nothing was wrong but she would have bled to death & he euthanized her. He was as broken up about it as I was cuz he had saved her life so many times before but couldn't then .

Piano was my gig till arthritis hit DS played alto sax & DD did piano. DH is a good singer but shy about it .

Wouldn’t that be interesting if humans acted that way. Sniff each others———— when meeting someone.

Not sure about that... sometimes I cannot even tolerate someone's perfume/cologne bath standing in line at the grocers

I like that our Silkies & Dominiques didn't have odorous feathers. Tight feather breeds like white Leghorn seemed a bit more odorous than our Silkies & Doms.
