That would be fun to follow. :caf We'll be building one this spring too, and I'm definitely going to have a progress thread. I want to get feedback and correct any oversights while we are building instead of afterward. :clap

I love coop builds. You will link the thread for us when you start won't you ValerieJ?

Hattie Seems Fine

She had her normal high voice this morning when I checked on them.

It is 40°F (4.4°C) with a wind chill of 31°F (0°C) due to 30 mph (48 kph) winds. Along with this we are having snow squalls that are creating white out conditions. Therefore, the flock is mostly in their coop. Which makes me very happy I built it so large. :D

I'm glad that she seems to be back to normal.

(and thank you for the metric conversions, saves me looking it up )

Wow I finally caught up after falling what seemed to be 20 pages behind, and with the holidays to make reading time harder to find, I feel bad for only occasionally “liking” posts and am wondering if there’s an etiquette to the practice. forgive me as a newbie but I’m liking everyone’s post in my head and failing to mark it on the actual post.

Forum etiquette, hmmm, I'm not sure there is. It's just great that you post. That will do me.:)
I hit the like button for just about everything except posts I really don't like or posts I've missed. On these 'personal threads' I try to give a like for all I read. On the general forums it's a bit different. I like the posts I agree with or the well presented posts that I might not.
I don't like every post though on the general forums.
That's how I do it. The why I do it on the personal threads is a) I'm a guest, and b) I rarely see a post I don't think deserves a like.

I just "like" everything I read as a way of keeping track of where I'm up to, and so you can tell I've been around "lurking".

I like Shad's system too

I'm trying to balance chicken keeping in this environment (foxes, pet dogs off the leash, hawks, hot hot hot summers) with all the work-related travel that seems to be increasingly required.

Details ahead! If I'm away for a month, the hens will need lots of space in a safe run. If there's going to be lots of space, it might as well be divided up into rooms for weeds to grow and for slowly integrating new pullets. Cool breezes, deep shade, dust holes (a dirt floor) and misting for summer. I need a few seats, a cup holder or coffee table of some kind, easy cleaning (not getting any younger) and easy pick ups off the roost at night, so a raised roosting box is called for. We don't get much rain here, so a rain water tank is mandatory. I'd like enough eggs for myself and to give away, so that means two pullets every two years with the old biddies living on til they're ready to shuffle off. So that's a flock of 9-12 hens - lots of feed and water dispensers so no one misses out. A dutch door to the run for tossing treats in without releasing the hens, while being able to open it fully when it's time for the chooks to rummage in the garden. In an earlier post I mentioned the roof and the paved perimeter to prevent predation. There are other details too, but I won't go on about it.

The first hurdle is council approval. The structure will be much more than the "no approval required" threshold of 5m2, so approval is essential. That means drawings, which is not something I'm good at :idunno

Don't forget to make sure that there are no little angles or spaces too small for a rake. Awkward corners are a pain.

That's funny. I was thinking about it yesterday. I posted this long post on Elphie that took a long time to write (including tears) and find photos for and there was so much other stuff going on that I felt it got lost. Of course I love all the fun conversations we have and I wouldn't want to stop that either.

I think you may be correct. I will keep writing them and posting them as I do but I think when I am done with Daisy's story I will go back and post them all together.

I think you have enough material there for a book Bob. I'd buy your flock stories, especially if you include pictures.

Or perhaps you could collect them all together when finished and make an article called "A Fluffy Butt Biography"

Im saying for the summary post to be added to the first post so its not a long list of links cuz thats alota work. But when you type a summary for that to include the other post links.

I know id like to be able to reread all of your stories in a reference. Thats alota work but id love to help! I could look up a series of post numbers for you and look for each post in that section.

That does sound like a lot of work :(

Bob, have you been writing up your stories in a word document then posting them on here? That would make it easier to post them chronologically all in one place later (like in a book! :D)

Well... Charlie is quite enamoured with “my” “new” chair, If that counts towards ‘for the cats’ :p. I removed the pony wall, jacknife sofa and angled room dividing “brace” from our slide out. I’ve been drying the carpet, treating for mold and will be redoing the bookcases I think (the backing for one was quite moldy!) This included rehoming a large spider.

I should have taken more pictures... Post Reno pics to follow as soon as I get things a little more tidy... I will pre warn you it’ll be fairly graphic pic’s, the chairs are just a little ugly, but not moldy! :D

That is a very beautiful spider. I bet it made you jump at first sight though!

You could self-publish a book through WordPress, they do print-on-demand.

Me too! That’s pretty much what I do too; hit ‘like’ for everything in my favourite threads so I know where I’m up to (even when they aren’t ‘like’ posts :() and then random ones I’ll like a post now and then.
